Game of Aussie rules here last year, some twat didn't like the umpire so after the game walked up to him and punched him out. The result, Umpire almost lost an eye, the offender 8 months Gaol. Not long enough really
What I find hard to believe is that the player involved had been red carded earlier in the week and played under a different name! Referees get too much grief in the professional game and more should be done to set a better example.

I reffed two open age Sunday league games, one I abandoned over fears for players safety. After that I reffed junior leagues for a while, but got fed up with the abuse from the parents on the sidelines.

It's all part of the process of undermining referees and creating a culture of hatred and disrespect around them, which ultimately gives rise to the scenario we see in this news item. Ridiculous. Refs don't make wrong decisions to deliberately piss anyone off, and the more they are vilified, the fewer people will want to take it up. Done [/QUOTE] Top post Polly. These ex pro players who slag off refs constantly and yet not one of them has taken up the offer to do the job. Our refs arent bent, they dont take bribes. They make honest mistakes. I do agree they are sometimes intimidated but i put all that down to that **** Ferguson and others have followed suit. They need more support to stand up to these cheating ****s and i include our players in that.
Given that refs make mistakes that change games, and even seasons, and definitely need some sort of tech support, the abuse they get is over the top. In truth, they generally make fewer errors than I would in their place - It's just that I have the benefit of replays later on to see that my "nailed on penalty" at the ground was nothing of the sort when seen on MOTD. Admit it, we've all done it. Perhaps they could start by only permitting the captain to address complaints to the ref, with cards for any other offender? Would at least stop the bullying that goes on by some teams?
Your average ref probably makes fewer mistakes in a season that your average player does in 90 minutes.
