A sad day indeed; a great musician.

Can anyone on here recall a Deep Purple concert at the ABC back around 1971 (ish!)? The music started, the dancing followed and the over-kill bouncers were chasing around making people sit down; the band stopped playing and left the stage, only coming back when the bouncers were removed to the back and dancing in the aisles and seat spaces was allowed to happen - recall trying to dance on the cinema tilting seats and those, alongwith half a dozen pints and a couple of whiskeys, managed to throw me two rows back and almost broke my neck! Great days, great band, ****e venue.

Can anyone recall who the band was (same era) who played at the City Hall and the big old keyboard (right at front edge of stage) had not had the wingnuts tightened, the music vibrations undid them and the tubular frames came away, the very heavy keyboard dropping to the stage. Problem was, fans were allowed to stand right up close and personal and had their arms on the stage banging out the beat - blue flashing lights and exit stage right four or five crush injuries - another joint, another day! Saw some great bands at the City Hall; would do it all again tomorrow!

Very sad. Looks like I'm of an age now where my adolescent heroes are starting to die off. Sands of time!

Its with great sadness that i heard last night of the passing of the great keyboard player - A Master of the old ivory - died from a fatal embolism after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by all his family as Jon slipped out of this world into the next one.

As the co-founder of Deep Purple along with Ritchie Blackmore they co-wrote such classic albums as Deep Purple In Rock and Machine Head. The all time classic Smoke on the Water will forever keep Jon Lord in all rockers memories. In 1969 Jon Lord also helped inspire and wrote Concerto for Group and Orchestra when Deep Purple played alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra @ the Royal Albert Hall in London. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG1hFUIDNU just how quality musicians of different types can mix and make such magical music.

Jon Lord was one of the best and maybe only the likes of Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson can say they were better players. Its all down to ones own opinion though. What is without a doubt is that Jon Lord and Deep Purple were massive influences on such bands as Iron Maiden, Anthrax and Rage against the Machine to name but just three. As Ex. Rage band member Tony Morello tweeted "RIP the great Jon Lord. So many great great songs and that INCREDIBLE sound of his. Thank you.!!!"
Jon was born in Leicester and classically trained. Like Ritchie Blackmore they actually understood music and how to write it.

30 years on after 1969,, Concerto for Group and Orchestra was performed again this time in Switzerland. The success of it allowed Jon Lord to leave Deep Purple behind in 2002 and go back to his roots and write classical music. Jon and Rick Wakeman were about to write an album together but sadly it never happened. That shall be ours and musics loss but Jon Lord leaves behind a massive back catalogue of Deep Purple, Whitesnake and PAL-Paice.Ashton.Lord songs. Robin Gibb and now Jon Lord within weeks of each other,. Who is next i wonder ?

1969 Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Dug the old vinyl album out late last night and transferred it to CD before the crackles get any worse. Watch it on you tube. Quality music and musicianship of the highest order.

1970 - I ligged my way into City Hall, carrying gear up the stairs, for the Who....so I got in Free. Same as the 'Live At Leeds' time (also recorded, but not the bass, so only used very recently on the re-issue).
