If King George VI died on 6th February 1952; and Elizabeth II was crowned on June 2nd 1953.... .....how the hell can this be her Diamond Jubilee????
Perhaps she became queen soon as he died n they had to arrange the concerts n stuff first before the crowning party?
The date isnât particularly relevant as its a year of celebration to mark the Queens ascension to throne after her fatherâs death in 1952. It is a government decision to have a long Bank holiday in June and have the main events over this period.
She actually became Queen upon the death of her father, it's a fluent transition & so her reign began on 6 Feb 1952 in fact.. the Coronation is the official ceremony and follows a period of mourning, it should be a time of celebration so a break is needed between the death of the previous monarch and the crowning of the new one.
Usually a diamond wedding is for 60 years, but in this case I think it's because her family have recently managed to appropriate their 60th sack of diamonds.
Should have held their celebrations in darkest, coldest February and injected a tone of reality, by making everyone watch the 'celebrations' on black-and-white TVs, with 7" screens.
