I'm probably being thick, but anyone familiar with London Travel have any tips for which to get for the weekend of our FA Cup final* visit, especially for 16 year olds? *I just love writing that.
https://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/terms-and-conditions/oyster/16-plus-oyster-photocard I think Oyster cards work out the minimum travel for your journey, and it looks as though the 16+ one is half fare but you have to register and pay a top up in advance (on a bank card). So for a one off I'd have said it wasn't an option
Oyster card will always work out cheaper than other methods of paying for travel, whether by travel card or individual tickets. It's just whether you can be bothered to sign up for it in advance.
If you're planning on making a weekend of it, and travelling around a bit, Oyster card is cheaper. Can make savings in a few places with one in fact. Just load it with some money, £15 is recommended for 2 days, and make sure you tap in and out. Easy to add more if you need to, and if you want the "change" you can send it back in afterwards. I know this because one of the wife's family asked me to research it a few weeks ago! Oh I think 16 year olds are considered adults for the purposes of the card, but you can take 4 under 11s with you for free.

They won't check at the barriers and ticket checks are very rare on trains in London and even then highly unlikely to actually check your age after seeing your ticket. Was caught out myself a couple of times though at 17-18 and had to pay fines so I suppose it depends how lucky you are
