Just heard the news, sad, He was great in not the nine o' clock news. Also like to say the 'fork handles sketch' may be the best sketch of all time, along with Benny hills 'cooking with fanny' craddock, and Spike milligan's euro jokes.
In his privatel life, he may have been a good guy and will be sadly missed by many, but personally, I couldn't stand the guy. Both him and Rhys Jones exuded an pretentious and self indulgent persona that made my skin crawl. Both so full of their own "funniness", and lauded by viewers who felt obliged to laugh just because of who they were. The likes of Ronnie Barker, Dick Emery, Benny Hill and Kenny Everett must be turning in their graves at the adoration of much lesser entertainers. To the previous poster - the fork ''andle sketch was written by Ronnie Barker for him and Corbett.
RIP Mel I really can't understand the need to diss the man on here. Surely the intention of the thread was to give respect not to open a debate on the merits of certain sketches. It shows your ignorance. You should open your own thread for those like minded as yourself, instead of disrespecting others. Ps - I'm a visitor as well.
I started the thread as a tribute to someone I class as part of a great double act. I never laughed because I was obliged to but because I thought them funny but looking at who you consider great i.e. Benny Hill who was nowt but smut Smith & Jones comedy goes over your thick head. Just an opinion like.
Terribly sad news and not the 9 o clock news was one of my all time favourite shows of the 80's and this is probably one of the funniest sketches of all time. Never stop getting tired of seeing it? Of course you are. But you can't expect to invade a neighbouring board and pass negative comments on a thread designed for respectful remembrance and not expect to get people's backs up. You can see how this behaviour would upset folk can't you? Or can you not see beyond your own opinions?
