Bit of a classic venue, closed as of today, seemingly for forever. http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/latest-news/top-stories/breaking-leeds-music-venue-the-cockpit-closes-its-doors-after-20-years-1-6832664
That statement is odd, as it's been "closed" for well over a month now. All of the upcoming gigs were already moved to the much better Brudenell Social Club. Edit: just actually read that it closed months ago "temporarily".
Bloody shame that, I've seen some great bands there. I've always much preferred a small venue where you can see the whites of the bands' eyes. I had tickets for The Strokes first UK tour there but they cancelled shortly before and when they returned they were playing bigger venues. Gutted.
That's a shame. Played there back in the day on "Brighton Beach" night. One of my most memorable gigs.
Trying to think of all the bands I saw there - The Libertines, Jamie T, Sparklehorse, 10,000 Things, The Young Knives, Ladytron. I'm sure there were others but it's a bit hazy.
Cockpit was a great venue , though its accoustics may be a bit lacking Brudenell is another great venue , with a bit more room . I think my lads band is playing there in November
I was only at The Cockpit a few months ago. Cracking venue but the likes of Brudenell Social Club and Belgrave Music Hall are much better for both acoustics and general quality.
