Long-term marijuana use appears to alter a person's brain, causing one region associated with addiction to shrink and forcing the rest of the brain to work overtime to compensate, a new study reports.

MRI scans revealed that people who use pot for years have a smaller-than-usual orbitofrontal cortex, a region in the frontal lobes of the brain that is involved in decision-making and assessing the expected rewards or punishments of an action, said study author Francesca Filbey, from the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas.

These regular and long-term users of the drug also experienced increased connectivity between regions of the brain compared with non-users, as the brain rewires itself to make up for the shrinkage in the frontal lobes, Filbey, director of the center's Cognitive Neuroscience Research in Addictive Disorders, added.

Probably OK in small dozes and for medical use, but not good for long term regular use...To be honest I didn't need a scientist to tell me that as I have saw it for myself in people that I know..

Well, prolonged use of Narproxin causes liver damage, don't get me started on the immediate effects of Tramadol, cognitive in particular. At least Weed is natural and not physically addictive. Most medicinal drugs have their draw backs, Weed ain't no different.

If we're talking recreation then alcohol is still the biggest evil of the drug world by a mile, smoking tobacco kills too, heroin destroys lives and kills, Mdma can lead to long term depression.

It's good to know all the facts and not surprised Weed has it's negatives, but it ain't the devil by a long shot, get it legalised, produce it purely, educate people about the pros and cons, get it taxed to help fund the NHS to deal with all the piss heads on a Staurday night in order to free money in the budget to cut waiting times for operations and create a new industry in the process I say.

My teenage son has admitted to having taken everything bar heroin. He started three years ago on green and this quickly led to six months hooked on cocaine....and nicking and borrowing anything he could to get his grubby mitts on it.

He's nearly ripped our immediate family apart, he blatantly nicked from me and my missus and took the piss until one day I put him on his arse big style. He hasn't taken the piss since.

One of the biggest worries now are 'legal highs'. Quite how people are selling this ****e beggars belief.

You telling me he started on weed before booze or cigs? Find that hard to believe. I've taken everything but heroin and I've never stolen from my family. People are quick to blame the drugs, maybe it's just the personality of your son, molded and influenced by the people he chooses to share his company with. Some of most exceptional people and some of the most evil people I've ever met have been drug takers. Drugs don't dictate your choices, not until there's a physical addiction.

Sorry to here about the **** your son's given you though marra, sounds like he needed putting on his arse. Good work. <ok>

flange <laugh> I know what you mean Comm.

I quit the ***s 15 years ago, it's one of the best things I've ever done. I don't drink booze in the house and only go out every now and then. Keeping fit and work are probably my addictions, I'm late forties and feel fitter physically and mentally than ever.

Drugs are for mugs, especially long-term usage.

He's got geordie, mackem and irish blood running through his veins, Bri. Nee wonder he's ****ed up <laugh>

Seriously though, he's caused all kinds of **** but the only people who have been there for him are me and the missus and a counsellor we used.....a bloke called George who was great. The amount of young kids out there using green is frightening.

I've been partaking of marijuana and hashish since 1967. I took LSD once a week for seven years, 1968-'75. At 56 years-old, I took a Masters degree - and lo and behold, passed with distinction. At 69 years-old, I didn't have a clue how to create a web-site. I now have the No.1 web-site in the world at what I do - No.1 with Bing, No.1 with Yahoo, and No.3 with Google (Internet Explorer is now a puppet of Bing, so I've missed them out, but I am No.1 with them as well for anyone who disagrees). Believe me, this guy is talking a load of sh*t.

Why don't we talk about my f**king "frontal lobe" - and then we'll talk about our respective f**king achievements - you PC asshole?

My mate took acid every weekend for six years during the late 80s and early 90s and blames this on him having depression and not being able to work for the past fifteen years <horses for courses?>

One of my other mates sits in his kitchen on his own most nights and gets hammered on wine and brandy.

I've seen him at times when he's a complete mess.

No one in their right mind would chose to be like that......surely?

I see both sides of green like, I smoke it, but my doctor knows. When I was a youngun, you didn't really get green, once in a blue moon, we had rocky, which was basically the resin from green then compressed with all sorts of nasty chemicals, sometimes you'd find plastic in the ****. Nasty stuff but week. Green maybe much more pure but it's strength is really strong. Not that I get much of a head change these days, still helps my illness though even if I don't get the recreational pleasure I used to.

Sounds like your lad is another casualty of today's society. I bet his mates are proper ****ers.

Some of them are Bri but the biggest w**ker is my lad. Fortunately, we know his game and we know longer fall for it. Me and the missus are both upfront with him now, if he f**s up we tell him straight. He's had jobs and blown them, had possessions and sold them - now he's working for me two days a week. Without me and the missus, he's f**ed. We try our best for him and fortunately for him, our best at the moment is good.

It seems, bit by bit, he is coming round. We take things a week at a time, it used to be a day at a time. Fingers crossed.
