Quick question what are the rules about giving customers money back because we supplied a perfectly good part that works and the customer doesn't like the part even though it isn't faulty and works as it should and when I told them how much the original equipment part costs they don't want to pay that because it's too expensive and instead want to buy their own part second hand and fit it. So what is the law on giving a customer his money back if the part is fine, he doesn't want to spend money on the proper dealers part and is supplying his own second hand part to fit themself?

You get a minimum 14 days statutory rights in this country when you can return any item, for any reason, in it's original condition with oe without packaging. Any company worth dealing with makes this 30days, and if you are suggesting you don't wanna reimburse your customer, I'd suggest you would be better off not running a business, as you will fail at it.
Reading the OP and subsequent comments it reads to me that Douglas is the buyer stuck with the pricey part and could be looking for a way of returning it by quoting buyers protection etc.
Talking about getting money back, my dad has been paying over the top for gas and has paid about £25 a month credit extra for about 5 years. Can he claim that credit back ?, seems a strange set up to me british gas I think. How many other people are in the same situation.
If he is in credit mate, the credit will show on his account. That means he wont have to pay his bills for quite some time to come.
