Nice one Dave. It is amazing though, that now the floods are are reaching closer to London, suddenly everyone is worried. Forget about the poor sods in the west who have been underwater since Christmas
exactly. lots of expensive homes in the thames valley getting flooded and it's a much bigger political animal. luckily i don't live anywhere near the thames or any of it's tributaries
You'd think that 'arry being such a good seaman would have a better boat than that to transport his Gran in.
Not many Labour votes to be had in Somerset that's why we haven't heard a peep out of Millipede and his lot!
Have to agree its quite funny how Cameron is now throwing money at it when his favourite watering hole is in danger of getting flooded! I mean where the hell is he going to leave his kids!
Typical Tory twat!! What can the leader of the opposition do to help in a situation like this? The only people who can help are the Government and they did sod all until the water reached the Tory voting heartlands and then it became money no object and how many soldiers would you like.
JWM, there isn't many times i disagree with you on this board mate, but Cameron has shown himself to be a self centred twat on this one.
I love that he said that, the Environment Agency basically said "Ooh good, let's see the cheque!". The reply was something along the lines of "Well, when I said that, what I really meant was........"
If the Environment Agency had spent more money on flood defences and dredging the rivers rather than creating wildilife reserves then things wouldn't have got so bad. Lord Smith is chairman of 14 different Quangos and works just 3 days a week! Nice work if you can get it!
Maybe, but ICE (amongst others) did warn the government of the consequences of cutting funding back in 2010: http://www.ice.org.uk/News-Public-A...EERS-VOICE-CONCERN-OVER-FLOOD-DEFENCE-FUNDING
This goes back further than 2010 but in the years since 2010 funding has actually gone up! The Agency has fourteen senior managers all on over 100k a year! Like I said nice work if you can get it!
It is more about spending priorities then the amount available to spend and unfortunately the Somerset levels were not a major priority for them!
Largely the point of having bodies like the environment agency is so that issues like this aren't politicised, they're not looking for reelection and should treat the country fairly, the issue is that when they screw up politicians immediately get the blame for the things that were beyond their control. One of the major issues that is the fault of politicains is John Prescott's office allowing building of houses on flood planes. Everyone has sympathy for people who loose their homes or are subjected to terrible living conditions and thankfully it does sound as though the money will be available to help them the question really is though is how much do you spend on average per house you save from flooding?
I love the way that now it's hit Dave's Tory chums it's "Money no object" However if you are disabled living alone in a 2 bed flat it's "Sling your hook pal"
