I think I killed my laptop. I'm hoping someone could identify the problem, as I don't know if I have picked up a virus or if it's just packed in generally. Windows Explorer has lost the plot. It will not load, constantly crashes, and therefore I am unable to do ANYTHING at all. My desktop icons will not load, I cannot access any files. It had been making a bit of a tired old whirring noise on boot up of late, so I wonder if my hard drive has come to the end of its life? But it was quite sudden that it stopped working altogether. If any experts out there have any suggestions, I would be grateful as ideally, I don't want to be forking out for a new one. I'm going to the seaside today so might not be able to get on here til tomorrow, but I am relying on you lot! You're the only hope I have! Any help would be much appreciated. Regards Party!
Does it work when on mains power? If it does it could be that either your battery or more likely your charger unit are ****ed. You can buy both on Ebay a lot cheaper than the likes of Currys etc.
Yeah it boots up on the mains, it's just it seems that Windows Explorer is crashing every minute or so. Message keeps coming up saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and that it's searching for a solution, and it keeps going through this cycle, so nothing loads up. I think it's buggered.
By the way, it's Windows Explorer that's down, not Internet Explorer. It's basically stopping my computer from loading up.
Yeah, safe mode works. Can I use stuff properly in safe mode? I'm thinking I might just need to use that to rescue stuff I want. I don't think this laptop is coming back to life.
After someone recommended him on here, I went to Peckhams on Craven Street and he's spot on, especially if you mention you're a City fan.
If its only just happened in the last day or so. you might be able to find a system restore point. Which takes your computer back to a previous state when it operated okey. The only thing with this is you will lose any data you have inputted since the restore point was created. My computer is an old machine running on XP and to access sytem restore you do the following. Go in to programme files, Then accessories , Then System tools , Then System restore. Ideally if you have access to another computer you check out "system restore" on the internet before you go ahead. If you do this and it works okey then i suggest carrying out routine maintenance such as "disk Cleanup" Go To "My Computer" Right click on drive C, Click "Properties" at the bottom and you will see the disk cleanup button. This can take a long time especially if you've not run this proceedure before. Also there are 2 other things you can do. Run the error checking routine. Which is "My Computer" , Right click drive C , Then "Properties" , Then click the "Tools" tab at the top. Then "Error Checking" Then tick the 2 boxes, Then press Start. You will then get a message saying the routine can't be done until computer is re-started. Click Yes. Then re-start your computer Then error checking routine will start as soon as your computer has rebooted and last about an hour. The other thing is to run the defragmentation routine on the same "Tools" tab. This can take several hours if you've not run it before. Hope this helps!!
Go with the earlier system restore suggestion. That is the easiest and best option. Other than that you need a repair using the install disk most likely. Chkdsk and Defrag are good things to use as mentioned above to keep windows running smoothly, but most likely won't help with this problem. It's just Windows being Windows.
Let this be a lesson. You just can't keep visiting 'those' sites in the current climate. Stick to xhamster or motherless in future.
If it boots in safe mode then looks like some dodgy software Is preventing you booting. Hit start type in msconfig then view startup panel and eliminate programmes one by one until it boots...
Thanks for the suggestions. I will attempt to resuscitate it when I get back. It seems like it is ageing and starting to give up, but you never know. It's purely Explorer which is busted, but it halts just about everything.
