9pm tonight on More4 Building the Dream. A couple self build their home in Hull. Cant say I've heard of this programme but its always interesting seeing a programme set in our fair City.
Not a good place for a new house, right next to the railway line. Where are the actual houses down there, chants end or Ella street end?
Chants Ave end. You can see them on google maps. When they said the price for the land, was that for the land that house was on, or the full strip they'd built the others on as well? Funny description "self build" as he had a lot of tradesmen on site. Isn't it more "self managed"? Which makes the cost savings revealing. I wonder how much was parts and how much labour. It'd be interesting to see what the others sold for because it's not the best location.
They did a good job on it IMO. I thought the interior was better than the house they went to look at in York. Not as cold and clinical.
I'd have thought they'd have got more than £350,000 for it. The railway line in question is in use but it's not a main route and hardly used I believe. It's a quirky little spot, a bit out of the way but only a short walk to Newland and Princes Ave. Good to see Hull portrayed in a positive light as well.
It's on sky on demand for anyone who missed it. Easily found via the index searching build... Season 2 episode 10
I agree - it was great to see Hull shown in a positive light for a change. I thought the design was good - I'd happily see more of those type of houses around Hull than the Barrett homes that keep cropping up everywhere. The street seems quite quirky - in the middle of a city, but almost like a country lane. Quite secluded, but near to all the bars and restaurants on Newland/Princes Ave. I like the railway line as a feature - adds a moving scene to your view.
You'll find people from the Avenues/Ella Street area tend to be much more creative than the average Joe in Hull, hence the area being dubbed the 'trendy, fashionable' area of Hull.
I used to live down Park Ave and I'm as trendy as they come. Lonsdale, Donnay and Dunlop are what I'm talking about. The cemetery down there is Jewish. Fact of the day.
The cemetery down there is Jewish. Maureen Lipman's family are in there - fact trump. Also, watched a programme about gothic revival architecture the other night, which was mainly about Sir George Gilbert Scott and his son and grandson. The old fella designed St Pancras / Midland Hotel, The Albert Memorial and the most of Whitehall. Anyway. turns out that Gilbert Scott Jnr designed the couple of massive houses on Park Ave where it intersects with Salisbury Street. View attachment 34000 Remember playing in these when they were pretty much derelict in the early 80's. Proper nice houses. I grew up in that area and would love to live in the Avenues again sometime.
I can't remember which Jewish Cemetery it was, but they were renevating it, and it meant relocating some of the occupants. They posted a list of the people they were lifting so that any relatives had an opportunity to discuss it. It just tickled me that one of the ones being raised was called Lazarus.
