An off topic subject for this morning. Lord Tebbit has urged for the possibility of the Death Penalty for those who kill Police Officers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19643846 Do you think the Death Penalty should be re-introduced for certain heinous crimes?
This subject comes up every few years, and is usually brought up by Tebbit. Why would we stop at Police Officers? The whole justice/penal system needs to be properly looked at - is it a punishment or rehabilitation? At the moment it does neither very well.
The whole justice system needs to be overhauled. Why is it someone can get 8 years in jail for copyright piracy yet some scallywag can get off with a years suspended sentance for beating some guy within an inch of his life? How is that consiatnt justice? I have always said that if you commit a crime worthy of a sentance (make these consistant) then you get a choice.....go to jail or join the army for 3 years - surely giving people the ability to actually do some good from their crime would save us, the taxpayer, some money and also maean the criminal gets some proper dicipline and not an XBOX and sky tv in their cell?
Sentencing needs to be looked at, but prisons shouldn't be made "tougher". If anything, the rehabilitation angle should be pushed more. You only have to look at the US prison system to see why punishment prisons don't work. Also, NO to death penalty.
I believe it is in Arizona or Nevada, Pieking, that the Prison Governors force the inmates to wear pink trousers and tops, when they leave the prison to carry out work in the community. That must be so humiliating for them ! Some people are "beyond" help - the nasty git that allegedly killed the two PC's in Manchester was out on bail at the time, after being possibly involved previously in a fatal pub shooting. He is out on bail, and kills again ! To my mind, totally beyond rehabilitation......
I have friends who work in a prison with murderers of all types and I agree to You only have to look at the US prison system to see why punishment prisons don't work. But i belive that people who want to kill and are totally beyond rehabilitation and should face a death penalty.
Would that include schizophrenics and others with severe mental health problems? If not, how would you decide just who did/did not "want" to kill? Are there other mitigating factors? Eg. the other day I was reading a report on some German POWs who were secretly recorded and some of the things that these men were chatting about were chilling - they began and then became once again, normal people. Nothing is ever that simple really - although I have to admit that there are individuals who I'd like to tear apart with my bare hands.
Certain criminals need and deserve to be killed, no doubt about it, but we should only enforce it when we are 100% sure. Kill the bastards, who deserve it. Kill them. Don't be all soft to them, kill them, they don't deserve to leave. Terrorist, murderers, *****philes all deserve to die.
What needs killing, is this morally bankrupt society that has produced characters like this murderer. When he was a little baby, he wasn't a violent, blood crazed villain. What happened to him, during his formative years and adolescence, that led to this tragedy?
It's always has been and always will be a question with so many differences of opinions. There is no simple solution that would make a government bring in such a punishment. So I don't think it will ever happen. But with a cold blooded murder such as this, it's just my opinion that he should face a court that can use capital punishment.
I have voted NO. No crime- no matter how big, is punishable by death. Even a mass murderer should not have their life ended by people playing G-d. <-- The smart ones on here will realise I'm Jewish, due to the letter blanked out! Happy New Year to you all! !!שנה טובה Here's a link if you want to know more about the new year festival currently going on!: http://www.factmonster.com/spot/rosh-hashanah.html Anyway, back to the topic- I think that no person shouldhave their life ended. As meowth said, they were not born to be a killer, but they must have had a bad upbringing which motivated them to do whatever they did. Even Anders Breivang, the Norwegian killer, should not be killed. Of course life in a top security prison- but not capital punishment. Killing people only makes the situation worse anyway- look at America and Osama bin Laden. As America cannot face losing its current global "superpower" status to China/Japan, they try and act big by taking out the guy, without even putting him on trial. How would we, in the west, percieve this if one of our leaders was killed by an Asian country, without even standing trial ?? There is no denying what he did was one of the worst events in modern history- but killing the guy makes you just as bad as him. ^ I think what I wrote reflects the Jewish view on the issue well- and I fully back it. Happy New Year! !!שנה טובה
♫♪♫♪Now my problems are all through, I have a Jeeew!♫♪♫♪ Have you seen that episode of FG, Stewie?
Of course I have! An even better song for a bednight song for those of those with young kids- why not play them Peter Griffin- "I Need A Jew!" It is a fantastic song! Link here- it's well worth a listen! I don't get offended by Family Guy, if any of you are wondering. I think the jokes are clever, and are never too far! Plus, its not only Jews they offend, their are plenty of Muslim jokes, along with some Christian, Chinese and Arab jokes, or "A-Rab", as Peter would say! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI3IHahHQIg I dont accept liablity if any of your children become anti-semetic for a while after hearing this
That was the song I was talking about. Right at the end after he has sung the whole song, the Jewish guy knocks on the door and asks Peter for help. That's when he sings the line I wrote, going falsetto right at the end. I think this episode was originally banned in the US for the content of this song, not for complaints, but the sheer fear of upsetting someone who might file a lawsuit. It was quite early on in the Family Guy series history. Now they have many shows behind them and are fabulously wealthy, I don't think they would be so cautious.
Yesterday was terrible, a tragic event for the families of those two police officers - I do believe that taking a life means the perpretrator should forfeit their right to freedom for life and should be held in humane but spartan conditions - but I can't agree with a death penalty. Good to see FG fans on here - a show that has the ability to make me laugh out loud and hard - at times completely irreverent but always managing to stay funny. The Chicken fight - just hilarious.
Interesting to look at two news items from the last few days. Firstly the cold-blooded murder if the two WPCs yesterday which has led to the "Chingford Skinhead" calling for the death penalty to be reintroduced. I don't recall him making any comment on the report into the Hillsborough tragedy. After a ridiculous delay, the truth has come out and the bereaved families finally have some chance of justice. In this case, the Police were shown to have lied. Now we know the truth, we can try to put it right. How can you possibly look the mother of an innocent man in the eye and say, "terribly sorry, we hung the wrong man." I do not believe it would be a deterrent as I don't think those that commit crime consider that they will get caught, let alone punished. One final thing. Not bringing back the rope will annoy the Daily Mail and it's readers, which is a justification for maintaining the status quo in itself.
I agree with Channonfodder - the criminal mind often does not contemplate detection so they are not deterred by the potential sentance. We also have to consider the effect of capital punishment on society in general. At the "thin end of the wedge" it encourages the attitude that society can discard those it has problems with. Society has to be responsible for all that travel in it (as do families). I do agree that in extreme cases "throwing away the key" is the only way to protect society but treatment within the walls of the prison must be humane. My only experience of prison was many years ago playing soccer against the inmates of Ford prison, then, as it probably still is, a very low security affair. Never-the-less hearing those gates close behind us after entry made me aware of how severe a punishment prison is no matter how supposedly good the conditions are. And I was only "in" for 2 hrs!!!
I can understand people feeling a death punishment is wrong and saying put them away for life in a high security prison. Have or do you know people that work within such walls and the strains on their life's that working in such a environment has. At present these walls hold not known to many people a vast amount of the worst type of ****philes. Which I won't go into anymore than that. Please don't say these people should not take on such a job because no ones knows what affect working in such a environment will have further down the road. So people should think a little deeper on, how can we police these places where you would like to send these people. Something that never seems to come up when this subject raises its head. We all know we are all going to die one day, but none of us can chose when and how.
