USA v GB in San Diego. Murray won earlier, then world No. 175 James Ward came on and got his arse handed to him in the first set by former Queen's winner Sam Querrey. Two hours later he's closing out the fifth set to win. Querrey basically soiled his pants in the last 45 minutes.
It's a scandalous disregard for the script, frankly. The second British player is meant to play appallingly and capitulate in embarrassing fashion, further highlighting the lack of depth in GB tennis. The script has been followed to the letter since Tim Henman got good back in 1996.
Don't worry the cricket team have used up most of the quota of embarrassment recently, there's none left for the tennis....
'Twas a good comeback but, on clay, there's no guarantee that we'll win a third rubber. Looking good though.
It's ok, I have been using that in the last few days to tell the Aussies how superior the English are...
Murray against a dejected Querrey isn't far from a guarantee, though. I think they made a mistake opting for clay - Querrey's serve would be far more of a weapon on hard indoor courts. Would Ward have beaten him indoors?
