http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-2038665/Jonny-Bairstow-way-ahead-England.html I couldnt believe it when he took his own life, it seems like yesterday but was 1998. I used to watch Yorkshire all over in the 70's and 80's. "Sir" Geoffrey Boycott, Stephenson, Old, "Rocker" Robinson and of course "Bluey" Bairstow. It seems strange such a fun loving character would suffer depression. Bluey used to get loads of good natured stick at The Circle, any little mistake and the cries used to go round the ground, " Come back Jimmy Binks". He would then make a point of showing the ball next time he gloved one to the crowd. Hope he looking down and is proud of his lad doing so well.
He was a good footballer too. I think he played for Bradford City at one point. Like you I used to watch Yorkshire and still follow them but it was one of the saddest days when he took his own life. He was good enough to have played more for England than he did and had he been playing today he would have been a certainty for the one day squads.
I may not have mentioned this before but i have bowled Jonny Bairstow out before.... thats my claim to fame sorted I think he suffered due to the bias against some of the Northern counties, i may be a young lad but love my County cricket, and we need some of his calibre in the side at the moment. Lets hope his lad does him proud!
David Bairstow was 46 when he ended his life. I remember him making the news on his Yorkshire debut. Sat his English A level at 7am in the morning and then made his debut for Yorkshire. Always a character and never let Yorkshire down in 20+ years in the team. Not quite good enough to be regular for England with Knott and Bob Taylor around but always on the fringes. He played a few games for Bradford City in the early 70s.
was there another yorkshire player who was on the books at man u about that time or was it bairstow? thought it was but cant find confirmation. edit: ignore it was arnie sidebottom.
and so we have the 2nd generation of Yorkshire cricketers where the scorebook reads "caught Bairstow, bowled Sidebottom". Players combining football & cricket used to be a lot more prevelent but as the seasons got to overlap, more it has become virtually impossible to play both.
yep i suppose denis compton was the most famous. the only recent ones i can recall other than the two yorkshire ones are chris balderstone, phil neale, and briefly botham. wonder if city had any.
and here is the answer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_cricket_and_football_players carter played for derbyshire a few times. http://www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/11036.html
