Anyone else on here an avid England and Yorkshire fan???? Don't know about anyone else but I sure as hell am and find it a bit frustrating that there isn't really anywhere I can find on the net to bitch/moan/celebrate when England or Yorks are playing awesome / crap ever since the 606 threads closed down, if there's enough interest in having a cricket thread up can one of the moderator types stickify this thread??? If not then i'll go back to trying to engage my clueless workmates in cricket talk....
I wouldn't say i'm an avid watcher of Yorkshire, but i've been to a few of their local meetings down at St Andrews Police Club and i go to Scarborough Festival quite a bit. I'd like to see what will happen with Smith and Pietersen down at Surrey, now they're team mates & can't avoid each other. India v England and Australia v South Africa will be 2 great test series, hopefully.
I know at least two other Yorkshire fans on here and I'm sure there's been a bit of cricket talk previously. I can see why a sticky thread would be a good idea, however I could also see why people might have an issue with it. There is a Yorkshire and England Not606 page isn't there? Although I'm not sure how busy they are. If you made it from a Hull and East Yorkshire England and Yorkshire fans that would probably suffice.
Personally glad to see KP back in the team, he is without a doubt (on his day) our best batsmen, and having played a lot in India over the past few years, albeit in the IPL, has more knowledge of sub continent pitches than the rest of the squad and could hopefully help some of the younger players. Also an option as a 3rd spinner if as expected Patel and Swann both play. Appreciate that he pissed a few people off, but in top level sport that's always going to happen, no one liked Boycott on a personal level, and by all accounts he was an utter twat, but there was no way he was getting dropped from the England team as his ability was far more valuable. Must admit I am concerned for the future of Jonny Bairstow, as a Yorks fan I see definite potential in him but he is far from ready for test cricket in my view, I personally feel that in the longer format of the game that Lyth, Gale and even Root are techincally better players and more suited to the long game. I worry that too much pressure is being put on him based on a few good innings in the shorter formats, and wouldn't want to see him spend next summer carrying the drinks for England when he should be working on his technique at Yorkshire!
Bairstow did well enough in the Test side in the summer against the Safas. I'm aware it was only one good knock, but still, 90 something on debut is good.
There's a county cricket board and an England one, there's a bit of traffic on the England one, but pretty much nothing on the county cricket one.
I certainly love my cricket both country and country, looking forward to this test series now KP is back.
I don't know how you can say Bairstow isn't as suited to the longer format of the game than Lyth, Root or Gale. Take last seasons stats for instance. Player Matches Inns N/O Runs High Score Average 100 50 Catches Stump Lyth (Yor) 12 15 1 751 248 53.64 1 5 12 0 Bairstow (Yor) 9 12 1 588 182 53.45 3 1 14 0 Root (Yor) 14 19 2 738 222 43.41 2 2 8 0 Gale (Yor) 14 18 3 481 80 32.07 0 2 4 0 If anything this proves he IS suited to the longer format of the game. Averaging over 50, averaging a ton every 4 innings. Lyth's stats are massively influenced by his 248 which was his only ton of the season. As an opener you would want him to convert more of those 50's. I think his temperament lets him down a bit there. He's always the "big shot" on his mind. I hope Joe Root gets a chance this winter, but I cant see it. If thats the case I don't want the ECB naming him in every squad to leave him out of the side like they did with Adil Rashid. Send him back to Yorkshire and let him play! Gales gone right off the boil since he became captain. Add Bairstow's one day performances to his first class performances and its very easy to see why he's in the Test side.
Definitely a fair point raised above, i'm basing my view on the past few seasons where i think Lyth and Gale have batted really really well, I think Bairstow is a good player with a definite future but worry about the Adil Rashid factor, I would hate to see him wasted as 12th man when he could be playing 1st division cricket and developing his technique and ability. I also worry that he will be found wanting against spin on what will be pretty horrible pitches in India and wouldn't want this to tar his reputation as I do think he has an England future
I've really lapsed with cricket. Used to love going to the Circle back in the day. Did the Scarborough Festival regularly too. I'm determined to take the lad next season to see Yorkshire. I was talking to Steve Patterson's brother a few weeks back, smashing lad he is too. Really proud of his brother. He was saying Yorkshire are playing in some ltd overs cricket abroad and his brother took Tendulkars wicket!!
I love cricket and so pleased that Yorkshire are back in the 1st Division next season. Hope they consolidate and stay there this time, they have made one or two useful signings in the bowling department and they needed some depth. Batting seems reasonably well covered providing test calls do not get in the way. As for England, they have to play Pietersen even though his head is so big - class always counts. Not sure how much longer Bresnan will survive at Test level, Finn seems to have the upper hand now and he may have to settle for 2020 & 1 day internationals after the series in India.
Bresnan's definitely 4th choice seamer after Anderson, Broad & Finn, but has the advantage f being a stronger batsman which will help against certain teams, Finn has indeed picked up an injury though, he's out on the Mumbai A game starting tomorrow, and possibly the 1st test, I personally think Bresnan will be our best bowler in the sub continent conditions as I feel Anderson relies on swing more than the others which he won't get, and Broad and Finn are better with pace and bounce which they're not likely to get, bresnan bowls a 'heavy' ball and can also revers it which I think will be beneficial on these pitches. As for Yorks next year, I really worry about England and England A / Lions call ups as we are likely to lose Bresnan, Bairstow, Lyth, Gale, Root and possibly Rashid and Rafiq at some point too which could decimate our squad :-(
I genuinely have no idea how county cricket survives. The few times that I see it there's no bugger watching
Disagree with you on Bairstow, his game is more suited to the longer format. I agree with the fact he is a quick scorer, however look at KP he is far more suited to test cricket. Both are far better players are up in the circle and they can dictate the field, where as in one day cricket that is a lot harder. I am unsure if he is quite ready for Test Match level, but personally i think the only way we will find out is by giving him a long run. Look at Ian Bell, took him a while to find his feet now he is vital to any hopes we have in India. On KP we needed him, Bell is going back to see the birth of his baby, so KP will be even more vital then, its all well and good having these talented youngsters, but we need to ease them in alongside the experience. However i wouldn't personally play Compton at the top of the order, as he doesn't open for his county and has opened i think in five county games so why is he ready for opening in International cricket?
