There's really no irony in there. If I had a brand new scooter bought for mere pounds and then claimed it was miles better than a scooter that is one of the most famous, historic scooters in the world with millions of registered fans then you may have had a point. Are you American perchance?
Some custom scooters have had as much as 10k spent on chrome, gold plate, art work. Plus the cost of the Scooter. You could get a deceny custom paint Job for £3k to £4k. Depends on what you want doing. My vespa spray job cost £900 , metalic blue with a glitter effect... With most Vespa , Lambretta nuts its not just about the scooter its the Music, the Rallys. The Mates etc. Away of life...
Also anyone can do 90 mph on a big motorbike...but it takes alot of guts on a well tuned lambretta.. On 10 inch wheels.... Its bad enough doing 65-70 Great fun though as OLM will tell you..
Vespas n Lambrettas are well cool fosse. The humble vespa been the second biggest selling vehicle on the planet.
Woah woah woah! I've just remembered. I was driving down Ferensway last night (about 8.45pm) and near the war memorial there was a gaggle of Lambretta riders and Vespa types. Some were beezing up and down the road, not a care in the world. Was this some kind of official event, or just a casual meet up like what the kids do? You get car gangs in Tesco car park so maybe they were going to have a turf war? I don't know, I'm guessing. OLM, you were probably there. What's it all about, eh?
Might have been one of the Hull scooter clubs meet up night Party, though two i know meet on a tuesday or a thursday though they do change dates and pubs at times.. most of them are in india Mr Crab. Though August bank Holiday sees a scooter invasion at the uks biggest scooter rally on the isle of wight.

When I first left school I was saving up for a scooter and used to pillion up with my mate. One night when I wasn't with him he had a real bad accident, broke a few bones and wrote his bike off. I spent my money on summat else, never went on a scooter again.
