Love The Wreckless One. Big Smash! was my revision album of choice when revising for O Levels and CSEs in the summer of 1980. Still takes me back to books out, reluctantly, on the kitchen table. Seen him several times over the years. The first was supporting Squeeze at The City Hall, in about '79. Bitter sweet memories. Good gig. Eric was sensational. Got into a fight with a drunken bloke outside. His mates tried to talk him out of it 'cos they could see that I was just a daft young kid. He thought different. Nutted me. Then hit the girl I was going out with. Cowardly twat. She later finished with me 'cos I hadn't waded back in, in defence of her honour. I was barely conscious!
Wow! Never saw them but one of the world's great forgotten bands I suspect. Eric got caught up in the whole Stiff, punk, new wave thing but essentially he was (is) a writer of great pop songs and much underrated. Even Cliff was a big fan. I just heard that Graham Beck played a set at a recent Arthur Brown gig in Hessle and, as a result, has gone up to Newcastle to do some work with AB.
i had the missfortune to see him at a student gig at LA,s in ferensway. he tried to slag off john lennon until real hull people gave him what for. overated pillock.
Beat me to it. Having said that, I went three times Once when it was Peppermint Park. I was 14 and my English teacher had given us tickets. It was a bit old for me. Second time as part of my Business Studies course during the daytime. It was a dump. Last time was a Tuesday night carwash night as the bird at the time coerced me. Wall-to-wall ****s. Edit: ****. I just admitted to going in there.
