I know some of our posters are in the US of A, and that others have done some globetrotting so I was wondering if anyone could assist? I'm currently trying to organise my honeymoon to new York and wondered I'd anyone could recommend hotels? Any help greatly appreciated.
I stayed in the YHA when I stayed in New York, I don't think your future missus would appreciate that too much.
I went on my honeymoon to New York and stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania. It isn't exactly romantic but it's slap bang in the middle of midtown, opposite Penn station and Madison Square Garden and a block from Macy's. I only booked it because I'm cheap (was about $100 a night if I recall correctly). http://www.hotelpenn.com/ I'm sure a man of your standing will probably want to find somewhere nicer. Pro's being location (and it has it's own entertainment desk who can get you tickets for broadway etc., although, again being cheap, I would rather go to 47th St and queue up at tkts for discounted tickets), Con's being that the line at reception can get very long. Luckily my flight got me there at nearly midnight so there was a small queue.
Afraid not, thought it might be a little bit of a help. My sister loves N.Y. but she had her honeymoon via a house swap- the Americans came to London. Guess Hull wouldn't be such a great draw if you went down that route though!
As it's for a honeymoon, you could always pay a little a extra and get the room Sid Vicious died in, I'm your missus would appreciate that, I know mine would. You've got millions of choices in New York, it's really down to how much you want to spend. Personally, I like the Soho area best, somewhere like The Soho Grand is good if you fancy wandering around Soho, Tribeca, Greenwich Village, Chinatown and Little Italy. http://www.sohogrand.com/ Last time I went, I stayed at the Hudson on West 58th, it's very trendy and not daft money, it's just off the south east corner of Central Park. http://www.hudsonhotel.com/en-us/?cid=GGL_UK_39584#/home/ If you want something really trendy and more central, there's four 'W' hotels designed by Philippe Starck(Lexington, Union Square, Times Square and Downtown). I've stayed all of them apart from Downtown, they're very cool, but the rooms are tiny, I like them if I'm there for 4/5 days, but any longer than that and it gets a bit claustrophobic. http://www.whotelsnewyork.com/?PS=P...ogle-BD_w_hotels_new_york_Exact_092710_NAD_FM Avoid the famous names, like the Waldorf Astoria, it's a ****-hole nowadays.
Avoid the places like broadway and central park, you pay a premium. Union Square is ideal as it's pretty central Manhattan and you can get pretty much to most places in quick time on the subways or even just walking in a straight line North or South. North takes you to Central Park and the museums, Empire State, Times Square, 5th Ave and shopping etc and South takes you down to Wall Street, Tribeca and Battery Park to catch the ferry over to Ellis Island. Plus you're close to Greenwich Village. Depending on how long you are going for, have you thought about spending the first fews days in a top uptown hotel and then heading to lower Manhattan when you get a better feel for the City? Unless you have an urge to see Brooklyn, The Bronx or Queens, then you're pretty much going to see all the New York sights in Manhattan.
I think you're doing Staten Island a disservice there. Free ferry from Battery Park, going past the Statue of Lib and Ellis Island before getting a bus to Historic Richmond to see what New York was like a few centuries ago under Dutch settlement.
My senior year of high school, my school choir sang as part of a program at Carnegie Hall. We stayed at the Park Central, which I remember being nice enough and pretty centrally located, right next to Carnegie and pretty short walk to Times Square and all the theaters. http://www.parkcentralny.com/
Actually you're right. I did catch the ferry when I was there on a previous visit and went to Richmond. Can't believe it was 10 years ago since I was last there. Twin Towers were just a hole in the ground surrounded by boarding. I'd been in the Sbarro on the top floor in the July the year before. Great city.
I thank all who gave suggestions. Very much appreciated. Got the hotel etc sorted but if anyone has any restaurant or general suggestions for meals, visits etc they would be gratefully received
**** that mate you 'll get mugged and possibly bum raped. Get yourself to Reighton Sands instead. I know someone who has a decent sized six berth who will sort you out if you mention my name. A few chavvy Wessies and the odd Orchard Parker but at least you're hoop will be intact. Hope that helps.
I'd recommend the Strip House, 13 East 12th St, it has a great atmosphere(it's dark, with a gentlemens club feel), the steak is amazing(go for the creamed corn as a side), but watch the wine you order. It's not cheap, but it's not ridiculous money and it's really special, just watch the unpriced wine list, ask the sommelier for a decently priced wine, there's some daft money stuff on there. http://striphouse.mobi/
Alternatively when you buy two large glasses of wine at the Clubhouse at Primrose Valley you get the rest of the bottle( half a glass) free. The chicken in a basket isn't bad either.
I have stayed here on business and it is in Manhattan. It is right near the train station and a bunch of things to see. http://www.newyorkerhotel.com/ It is a classic hotel but I don't have to much to compare it to as I tended to avoid New York when I lived on the east coast.
