AVB: "We looked like the away team, we played in a difficult atmosphere with almost no support. The fans can do better."

Hardly the way to endear yourself to your own fans. I'm sure he did something similar at Chelsea.

It says something that even though they are winning their own fans are by enlarge extremely unhappy with their performances.
They are awful to watch, awful on a par with Pulis's Stoke.

'Arry Villas Boas is slowly losing the plot, the other day he was blathering on about Arsenal dropping points a la' Arry 'We're better than Arsenal' instead of talking about his own team and today he's slagging off his own fans, which I suppose he should get some credit for <whistle> even if he is a stupid twat for doing so.

Needless comments from Villas-Boas. It's the players who need to take the initiative and give the fans something to shout about. If the manager wants more from the fans a more charming way to go about it is to get on the touchline, shout and indicate to them with your arms that you want them to generate a lot more noise.

Quite a contrast on the other side of London where our manager was sharing the love with the fans.

I expressed my concerns with AVB and style of football 2 years ago so won't go into that again but I agree.

5 league goals from open play in 9 games is a staggeringly frightening stat. I'm amazed people thought Spurs were title contenders and had a better best XI than Chelsea a few weeks ago. From
where I'm sat if all PL sides could put out their best XI theirs would be 7th/8th albeit their squad is superior to all bar a handful of sides.

I still find it ridiculous that Real spent so much on Bale but they look to have really wasted the money. Even the creativity they have, Eriksen, doesn't start now.

Eriksen and Lamela are arguably their most creative players yet AVB prefers workhorses Sigurdsson and Townsend with less technical ability. Bizarre.

I think everyone could see selling Ozil and Higuain for Bale was terrible business on Real's front and the reason they will do well to come 2nd in La Liga this year for me.

It has to go down as one of the strangest transfers in history. Not sure what Bales agent gets but he's worth every penny.

I wish Bale all the best but think he'll get found out there. Not on Neymar/Ronaldo/Messi's level. Will most likely end up at Man Utd in 2/3 years.

I think that's a good shout. Bale is nowhere near the quality of Ronaldo and his peers. The Bale deal could turn out to be one of the most overrated and expensive deals in history.

This. Why the hell did they play him at centre forward the other day as well?!? Classic case of spending 80 odd million on a player they didn't need and finance it by selling a much better all round player in Ozil. Madness.

Bale was really enjoyable to watch and scored some great goals...the reason he isn't in the same league as Messi, Ronaldo etc. is that he is so dependant on his speed. I would have been very pleased at us getting over £40m for him...£85m was fantastic...especially considering that IF he develops hamstring problems or knee/ankle problems as so many speed merchants do he will not be anywhere near as effective.

    As for AVB's comments...
    1) too much has been made of them by the press/media desperate to get phone ins and papers sold
    2) he was naive (at best) or dim to think he could say what he did without it being presented as it has been
    3) he has a point...ALL clubs that improve and pretty much sell out most games end up with either tourists or corporate plastic types who know little about football, are passionate so they are quiet...man utd, city, chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton, Spurs etc. have all seen a dip in the atmosphere in general apart from what are called the "big" games.
    4) Maybe he thinks this will make the Lane louder and therefore more intimidating for away team

I was at the match on sunday with my daughter...it was our first game this season at the lane and while the fans were patient and not getting on the players backs it was subdued and tense...the style of football is not particularly exciting but most fans understand that this is a very changed team and we are 4th while not clicking...if we begin to gel then AVB will get the noise he craves ... however if we play badly and lose in our league coming games which include Everton, United and Liverpool then I can imagine any crowd noise being aimed at him ... if you criticise football fans then you have to deliver or you'll end up finding them criticising you...and there is only ever one winner when that happens.
I am also at the cup match v Hull on Wednesday with my daughter so it'll be interesting to see if the atmosphere is different

If AVB wants the crowd noise then why not ask for the support by other means, ie through Spurs team websites, match day booklets, any other way than criticising on tv after a match, what did he hope to achieve. Jose managed to boost support during a game, by positivity (and a lot of arm waving ) not criticism.

When were people saying we have a better first 11 than Chelsea? I've never seen that mentioned once(unless maybe HIAG said it) and when people have been talking up our side what they've been talking about is the strength in our squad, saying that we could field 2 totally different sides and do well in the Premier League. The same people were also talking about Liverpool and Arsenal as title challengers so take it with a pinch of salt, all they were saying is that they felt we could be up there at the end of the season.

People are dismissing our spending and chances now based, seemingly, purely on the lack of goals and unconvincing performances. You could just as easily make a case for us being brilliant by being blinkered to certain facts too, the truth is that at the moment it's been a mixture of extremes.

    Very good:
    6 cleansheets out of 9(league)
Record start to PL campaign for us
    Perfect record in cup competitions

    Very bad:
    9 goals in 9 games(league)
    Performances not meeting expectations
Not winning a game when we've conceded

It's all about how you want to look at it. You might not think it's £100mill worth of improvement but it certainly looks like we've improved our squad and it's showing by us making 7/8/9 changes for midweek games and still getting the results across all competitions. So as I said, it's been a case of extremes but overall we've done okay so far.

I think we both agree that the results in our upcoming games will be more telling so for the number of conclusions you've drawn a quarter of the way through the season is staggering, especially considering how negative they are when you clearly think we're punching above our weight in 4th.

It's a real shame that what avb said about the fans is overshadowing the quite ludicrous penalty they were given.

shows he learnt something from jose...how to distract from a loss/ bad performance is one of his trade marks...protects and backs his team really well when he does it
