Exhibition centre set up as temporary home for 400 refugees

    Thursday 25 September 2014

The IJsselhallen exhibition centre in Zwolle has been turned into temporary accommodation for 400 asylum seekers as an emergency measure.

One of the centre’s halls, covering 3,000 square metres, has been kitted out with bunk beds to cope with the surge of refugees from Syria, Eritrea and Somalia following an appeal for extra accommodation from junior justice minister Fred Teeven.

The city’s mayor Henk Jan Meijer says the measure is far from ideal but is the only option the city has. ‘It is an exhibition centre, not a nice living environment but it has been made ready within 72 hours,’ he told broadcaster Nos.

Refugees will not be confined to the centre and the mayor now plans to talk to locals and shopkeepers about ensuring there are no problems.

Dutch cancel 49 jihadist passports and freeze bank accounts

    Sunday 28 September 2014

The Netherlands has cancelled the passports of 49 dual nationals, 41 of whom were planning to head to Syria or Iraq and eight who are already there, the justice ministry confirmed at the weekend.

In addition, 30 people have had their claims for social security benefits cancelled and the bank accounts of 12 people have been frozen, justice minister Ivo Opstelten told current affairs tv show WNL.

Thirty people in the Netherlands are the subject of criminal investigations in connection with their support for jihad, the minister said.

In addition, over 30 of the 140 Dutch nationals known to have travelled to Syria or Iraq are now back in the Netherlands and two are in custody.

    Uniform

Opstelten also reacted to last week’s formal government advice to members of the Dutch armed forces not to travel in uniform. That is nothing more than a precautionary measure and happens in many other countries, he said.

Dutch soldiers have twice been warned before not to go out in public in uniform: once when the Netherlands was involved in the mission in Iraq in 2003 and once when Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam video compilation Fitna was issued in 2008, Nos television said.

The official threat level in the Netherlands remains ‘substantial’ despite the Netherlands decision to send six F-16 fighter jets to take part in the coalition bombing IS targets in Iraq.

Man who threw toddler over balcony is jailed for 10 years

    Friday 19 September 2014

A 39-year-old man who threw a toddler off the sixth floor of a block of flats in Amsterdam's Zuidoost district has been jailed for 10 years.

Paul Ali, who is 39, threw the three-year-old boy over the balcony because he was 'evil', the court was told. Paul Ali said he was under the influence of drink and drugs at the time and remembers nothing of the incident, local broadcaster AT5 reports.

The child, named as Blessing, was the son of his cousin Moustaffa.

The public prosecution department had called for a 16-year sentence for murder. The court, describing the act as 'inexplicable', found the defendent guilty of manslaughter.

Amsterdam wants to house fewer refugees

    Thursday 18 September 2014

Amsterdam city council has made a plea to be allowed to house fewer refugees with residency permits because of the acute shortage of housing in the city.

The Volkskrant reports that city officials are concerned about the impact on low income locals. This year Amsterdam is still supposed to house 695 refugees but only 5,500 rent controlled properties are expected to become vacant.

People with medical problems also have priority for rent-controlled property which means 'ordinary' families can wait years for a house, housing alderman Laurens Ivens told the paper.

Amsterdam officials are to discuss the issues with provincial and national government.
