If we're all being honest, of course London shouldn't win and Im reassured to see Bradford in there which really should take the title. When the whole furore around Hull winning broke previously a well known journalist I happened to be friends with at the time said it was well known that they were going to name Bradford as the UK's biggest ****hole but they took a political decision not to due to racial tension at the time. Cue a barrage of Daily Mail readers...... Ive never been to Southampton, surprised to see it so high. I always expected it to be quite nice, although I don't know why. Any views from those who know it?
And this years award for crappiest book... Sadly, this WILL get talked about, it WILL get airtime on radio and TV. Every town has got nice bits and ****ty bits. Except Stoke.
Yeah, it really is ludicrous to have London and York in the top 5. Worst places Ive been are Bradford and Hemel Hempstead. Milton Keynes deserves special mention for just being ****ing weird and soulless. The whole city is like an out of town retail park.
Bradford was a very wealthy city and has some high quality buildings. And of course it's been enriched in the last 50 years or so. How come York makes the Top 10, ffs? Granted it's a bit 'chocolate box' to appeal to the Nips and the Septics, and there is an increasing smug student element there, but it's still one of the nicest cities in the country.
Top ten is a bit of a mixed bag! I'd agree with Coventry. Crap train station, crap road system, couldn't find anywhere to get a drink or eat. Stayed at the Ricoh Arena. Undoubtedly the worst conference facilities I've ever seen. Space is crap, service is crap, signage is crap, communications are crap, lifts are crap, lunch was crap. But the crapppest was the accomodation. The hotel rooms are the corporate boxes. Food and wine stains on the wall. Door to pitch side locked 'for your safety' (Hello, fire hazard). Locked cupboards on wall with 'Do not open' signs. Promised WiFi unobtainable. Room service unavailable. The place was so bad and amateurish it was laughable.
I'd put Luton top, closely followed by Stoke, unless Wembley can still be considered a town, in which case it probably wins.
Yes, and Bradfordians STILL go on about them having more Rolls Royce per head of population than anywhere outside London despite the fact that was 60 ****ing years ago. It was nice, it got ruined, it's now ****ing abysmal.
Talking to some 19-21year olds from Pocklington a while back .They all used to go to York to shop/nights out now they come to Hull cos it is just a better more fun place to be. Has Smoggy land been demolished or has it been given an honoury position for ****ness that we just take for granted?
Is it based on statistics or is just someone's opinion? Based on statistics it's understandable why London is top of the list, high rent, high crime, low standard of living...etc. Even based on statistics these lists are still utter bollocks though.
if it was based on opinion, anywhere above the North/Sarf divide would be in top 10. If we get City Of Culture, that will grind some southern journos gears. 72.9837% of statistics are made up anyhow
It's just public voted isnt it? That's how the authors get away without abuse: "we're not the ones saying X, Y, Z are crap, the public are".
