Thank **** we live in a half-sensible country! (Comment: ellewoods?) HOUSTON — It seems new National Rifle Association President (NRA) president Jim Porter may have found himself in a bit of hot water. Not long ago he made his feelings about the Civil War known when he referred to it as the “War of Northern Aggression.” In that same speech he referred to President Obama as a “fake president” and Attorney General Eric Holder as “rabidly un-American.” However none of those remarks that anyone could deem as racist compare to his remarks made at a recent press conference discussing his new leadership role at the NRA. “I’m very proud to be taking the lead here at the NRA. We need to really buckle down and strap on our best arguments to defend what is our God-given rights. No more northern folk tryin’ take away what is rightfully ours. I will not stand by and let some liberal-elitists try to ruin what has made this country great, especially a liberal of, you know, a different breed.” When asked to clarify Porter said, “I don’t have to clarify. You know gall darn well what I mean. In fact, it’s only a matter of time before we can own colored people again. They sure as hell won’t be our leaders. It’s out-right embarrassing. The War of Northern Aggression made it all possible, and you be best to know it’s all gonna change back. I’ll be on the front lines making sure it happens. I don’t want my grandkids growing up taking orders from a colored man. It’s our God-given right to keep them as property and keep them in line.” Several at the NRA, including vice president Wayne LaPierre, have since tried to distance themselves from Porter’s remarks. LaPierre said, “They brought him in over me to try and liven things up, calling me boring and rehearsed. Next time they’d be better off just making me president.” It’s still unknown if the NRA and Porter will write an apology and retraction to his comments. as much as i would love that to be a genuine quote, i'm afraid it isn't. it's from this site, one of those that makes up joke articles: http://www.freewoodpost.com/2013/05...-time-before-we-can-own-colored-people-again/
Stan, you've just cut and pasted from a US version of Newsthump....the clue should have been the banner with "News that's almost reliable". Satire though can sometimes say awkward things in a funny way, and the NRA really are a bunch of ****wits. Amazing that they wield so much power.
No it isnt far out at all. I grew up in a place that I have heard the same stuff. It was called "The War of Northern Aggression" where I grew up and it is still called that in many places in the South. People here do think that it is their god given right to own firearms. Racism is still a real thing here and plenty of people have those feelings and express them openly. Nothing in that post is the least bit shocking. I guess people above are saying it isnt an accurate article but like I said that stuff is said here all the time so it isnt really that inaccurate of an article.
Nonetheless, the bloke is a political zealot who is intenet on seeing the Second Amendment unhindered. Gun control and a change in the gun law is required in the US. I find the NRA a deeply disturbing organisation.
It's unfortunate that there's so many on the wrong side of this debate in the US, that you thought this was a genuine article. Unfortunate, but understandable. Though I'm not sure why you asked ellewoods to comment, he strikes me as a perfectly reasonable bloke with opinions which are not dissimilar to our own. I know he's our most regular US based poster, but he can hardly be expected to justify or condemn everything that happens stateside.
Why do the Amican NRA get so involved in these things? Ours just count otters and carps and give out fishing licences.
OLM - I hadn't realised (at that moment) that it was a 'spoof' article. I agree with you as to ellewood's persona/character, but I was merely asking for a Stateside view/comment on this. (I could have asked any, or all, our US posters, but his name was the first to come into my mind).
I wasn't taking a pop, I've just noticed that ellewoods often gets asked to comment on US matters, sometimes in a less than reasonable manner(not by you), he seems to take it all in his stride, often far better than I would. Vote ellewoods.
If this is a fair reflection of a significant strain of US thinking, it has the unfortunate effect of making our own right wing nutters seem almost reasonable. But only by comparison.
