shocking, my Grandfather worked in the print room at the Echo for many years and stayed on to help with the move from the Wear Street site to Pennywell. He will be turning in his Urn.
Bloody hell. I used to have a student kinda job up there when it was the north east press in the early 90's. I didn't know they had sold out to a national operator. The writing is on the wall when you do that. They look for synergies and efficiencies. What a bloody shame
Sad for the people involved but to be honest, the paper is ****e and has been for years and is has more advertising than news. I wouldn't even buy it to read Sunderland stuff. Graeme Anderson is a tired and well past his being an interesting journalist and sports editor. However, I still buy and like the Sunderland Football Echo which is a much better paper even if its Anderson who does that. Very strange.
I've always had the echo and football echo delivered, but if they move operations to Sheffield, which is what I have heard, I will be cancelling my subscription.
I'm with Cest shame for the staff but the actual paper has been **** for years! And for a NE newspaper it has had some very iffy political views over the years.
It would be very interesting to find out how many people actually have the Echo delivered. I am one of many I suspect that never ever buy a newspaper these days, preferring to go online to find out any news. The paper boys and girls used to deliver to every house but its very rare you see one now. Unfortunately the writing has been on the wall for a while now, same as ebooks putting the bookshops out of business -- is it progress?, I think it is but I think many would disagree.
