I was looking at the table and thinking that Chelsea are far behind but it's deceptive. Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle are trying for 3rd place in case Chelsea win the European Champions League but Chelsea only have to come 4th.
I'd prefer Tottenham to get it. Then Newcastle. Newscastle have done so well this season, but I don't like them after a few fans threw chips at me haha
I think 4th is gonna be bad tbh, cos I believe Chelsea will beat Bayern. Actually, in that case, what happens to 4th? Do they end up in the Europa league spot and 5th lose out totally? That would seem the fair way so I suspect its not like that.
Isn't it at the moment that the top 4 go into Champions league and 5th gets Europa league? But if Chelsea beat Bayern, they automatically qualify, meaning its only the top 3 that go through to that from the PL? Making 4th which would normally expect to go to the Champs League, dip out. So even with Chelsea finishing 6th, they could end up at automatic qualifiers, and rightly so of course. Does that make sense what I'm asking?
The problem is that if Chelsea finish 6th but beat Bayern then the 4th goes in the Europa and the 5th may not go into the Europa but I don't know either. I think too many games are played: scrap the Europa League, scrap the Champions League group stages and reduce the Premier League to 16. Club managers are always complaining they don't have enough time to work with players in training and it would also reduce the club v country conflicts. Taking 4 out of the Premier League would improve the status of the Championship. All my views wont happen because of money.
I hope the Geordies finish 3rd!! Simply because they're Northern! Although I still reckon 4th would be a hell of a finish for them.
Normally it would work that way. Chelsea though already have a guaranteed Europa League spot because the FA Cup Final is against Liverpool who've qualified through the League Cup. If they then qualify for the CL their Europa place will be given to the highest PL team not to have qualified for Europe. As Chelsea are guaranteed to finish in the top 6 it means there's 4 CL places and 2 Europa places to share between them so they'll all be in Europe next season. If they finish outside the top 4 and then win the CL they just swap their Europa place with the 4th placed team for the CL spot.
Aha so, if Chelsea win the CL, they're in next seasons CL, along with the 1-3 from the PL, so 4th and 5th end up in the Europa League and 6th get fook all? But if Chelsea lose against Bayern, Chelsea go into the Europa League along with 5th in the PL, 1-4 in the PL do CL and 6th still gets fook all? Hang on, so we have 2 EL spots up for grabs, and 4 CL spots correct? Based on the current standings (yes I know they'll hopefully change, Im just trying to work this out in my head) EL1 - Liverpool EL2 Chelsea if they lose against Bayern, otherwise Newcastle CL1 Man C CL2 Man U CL3 Arsenal CL4 Chelsea if they beat Bayern, otherwise Spurs. Also, if Chelsea take this spot, Spurs end up in EL and Newcastle end up with nothing Is that correct now?
I think it's wrong that there's a possible situation where 5th place end up with **** all, they ought to change the rules. At the end of the season, say Newcastle end up with 15 more points than Liverpool. Newcastle have generally performed far better than Liverpool over 38 games, but simply because Liverpool won three extra games in the League Cup - and beat a Championship side in the final, with their full team out - ON PENALTIES - they get into the Europa League ahead of Newcastle? it's absurd. This year may be a bit of a bad example as Liverpool knocked out Chelsea and Man City to win, but even then it's still ridiculous.
No. With the way things have worked the top 6 this season will all be in Europe next season, as will Liverpool as League Cup winners. Based on current positions: Man U (1st), Man City (2nd), and Arsenal (3rd) would definitely be in the CL, and Newcastle (5th) definitely in the Europa. Spurs in 4th place would be provisionally in the CL, and Chelsea (6th) in the Europa. If Chelsea won the CL then they would just swap the places. If Chelsea jumped above Newcastle and finished 5th, Newcastle would still be guaranteed the Europa as one place is handed out for the League, and Chelsea would have qualified for the FA Cup so the one for finishing 5th would become the one for finishing 6th. Again, if Chelsea won the CL they'd swap places with Spurs. You can blame the expansion of the CL for that. It used to be the case that the winners of the CL were awarded a position by UEFA so that the qualification rules for leagues weren't affected, but the idea of having a quarter of the PL in the CL is taking the piss even more than it already is Liverpool should get it because they've won a competition and that is the prize for winning the Cups. We can't go devaluing the League Cup any further by saying it doesn't get a guaranteed place for the winners, it's already less rewarding than the FA Cup because the losing finalists don't get the place if the winners qualify for the Champions League. Teams know at the start of the season that it works like this, and really, in a normal season has 5th done that much better than 6th that 5th should be guaranteed a Europa spot and 6th gets nothing, whilst a Cup winner (or losing finalist in the FA Cup) can be relegated and qualify?
I'd love to see The Jawdies finish 4th, celebrate like fook and then Chelsea win the CL and they weep into their Newcy Broon about "Howay man, it's not canny fair, like. Where's my peas pudding?". To quote Kevin Keegan, I would love it. We would then get the inevitable outcry to UEFA about how it's not fair despite the fact it is completely and utterly the PL who decide how to allocate their 4 places.
Yep, Ricardo's right: CHELSEA WIN CL: 1-3 plus Chelsea in CL Next two in the league plus Liverpool in Europa CHELSEA LOSE CL: 1-4 in CL Next team in the league plus Chelsea and Liverpool in Europa
There are 3 Europa League spaces available. One for the league (those finishing 5th), one for the League Cup (taken by Liverpool), one for the FA Cup (as Liverpool have entry through the league cup, it's Chelsea's spot already). If Chelsea win the Champions League, they'll take their place in that competition, 4th place will get the 'league' Europa League space and 5th place will get the one carried over from the FA cup
Well after this weeks PL fixtures/results and looking at what teams have left,, i shall go as follows :- 3)Tottenham Hotspur 4)Arsenal 5)Newcastle 6)Chelsea IF Chelsea win the CL Final then Arsenal and Newcastle go into the Europa League.
