Here is a big sentimental question. Simple yes or no answer. Should Milner, or any other arrivals this summer, take Gerrard's number 8 shirt?
Sentiment. It will obviously also add media pressure. Carroll was no Torres, Aspas was no Carroll, Lambert is better than Aspas but is still no Torres.
for me all you do is attract press agendas and commentary. I would just leave that shirt alone for a year Its the same as no 7.. take it last year and you get compared to suarez.... someone like milner takes it now.. who cares people who are reds fans will do the comparison when none shoudl be done and media pict it up to have a go IMO
Knowing Rodgers he'll probs make him no. 94 or whatnot Who gives a **** at the end of the day, it's jus numbers innit The player makes the number the number doesn't make the player
Milner is not worthy of that shirt. Same as Lambert isn't for 9. It adds immense pressure to whoever wears and it requires a supremely talented and confident individual. It's another thing that really impressed me with Can who wears Carra's number. Little thing, I know - but it shows 'character'.
The number doesn't mean anything, until you start telling your new players which numbers they aren't good enough to wear.
Don't agree with that. He's a red through and through lived his life with passion for the club - gets a second chance to play for us he can have whatever number he likes. We had the shirt number discussion a while ago - they used to be 1 - 11 you had the number that signified your position. Dalglish was a traditional no. 7 for example, Suarez chooses to play it. Some players have 'their' number that they play from club to club that says nothing about their present club's shirt number history but more about them personally. If a player who's an '8' joins us all well and good, if a player chooses it, that tells a different story ....
No room for sentiment. Lambert shouldn't even be at this club. I know it sounds harsh but it's the reality, and part of the problem why we are where we are.
Agree with MITO, it doesn't mean **** until the media start bringing it up. Milner taking number 8 will be back page news which puts unnecessary pressure on him. Milner wears number 7, so give him that and it will seem a normal thing to do with no mentioning of Suarez.
At the end of the day, it is just a shirt number. If a new arrival is confident enough in their own ability, they shouldn't be fazed by a number if if they do believe the hype attached to it. However, I think Milner would prefer the number seven. The only doubt I have about that is that the Daily Star are saying he'll go for number seven too
exactly.. nobody needs that just little extra pressure.. and if things are not going great and the rags plaster a direct comparision with whatever player to gerrard in 2005... it doesn't help does it? Its all the small little things a manager should do to just help his squad.... when suarez turned in he wanted no 7 badly. it had been plagued with **** like smicer etc for years. he wanted to comparison with dalglish and took 2 years to justfy it. if messi wants to come take no 8 by all means. milner? nah just take no 7.
I agree with this. Lambert at the time pre suarez going was tenuous at best as a signing. so was aspas. yes it is a big part of the problem. average players = average performance. he took 9 cos it was wide open. I think him and carroll before him have made that number look **** so ANYONE decent taking it next year can have a free run.
A difference with Can is he plays in a different position to Carragher. If he was an experience CB it could be very different.
Mate I've just glimpsed your 'likes' - 3,483 - some people must like what you have to say then, despite what the haters say
