David Nugent has said he feels he should be taking more responsibility with penalties rather then letting the younger players like Anthony Knockaert, Chris Wood and Ben Marshall take the responsibility from the spot When we won the peno against Watford I called at the time for Nugent to take it but Knocky stepped up. Nugent has only took 2 penos in his career which was both in the last 12 months. When we won the peno against Wycombe both Nugent and Wood wanted to take it but now it seems Nugent is going to step up as the senior player His contract expires at the end of the season and Nugent says he wants a new one. Even with FFP we will be able to offer more in wages then most teams in this league but Nugent knows he will have to take a decent drop in wages even if he stays or goes
If there's a player who I don't mind too much having large wages at this club, then it's David Nugent. I still think he's one of the best secondary strikers in this division, and I wouldn't like to see him in the hands of one of our rivals.
I did think at the time that this was behind Nugent's thinking against Wycombe. Still, surely he should have discussed things with the boss during pre-season; Wood certain seemed to believe he was the nominated taker. It's one thing to put yourself forward as the nominated penalty taker, but once the boss picks, you stick with it. Arguing for the honour just before a PK was unprofessional and potentially distracting - it reeked of bad organisation I'm afraid.
