With the recent political news speculation on the possible abandoning of Trident by Labour for deal with the SNP to win the election - so thought I'd ask ... Do we need nuclear weapons ? ...and why? is the £25bn cost of Trident a 'price worth paying' for Britain's 'security'? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...its-own-nuclear-weapons-arsenal-10164477.html http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/14/nuclear-weapons-accident-waiting-to-happen http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22023184 http://www.nti.org/gsn/article/does-britain-really-need-its-own-nuclear-arsenal/ http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/s...t-the-costs-and-benefits-of-renewing-trident/ http://www.theweek.co.uk/general-el...why-parties-are-rowing-over-nuclear-deterrent
Not really worth having so few in comparison to the only country we're ever likely to need to use them on! The Russian's have thousands that don't work, complete duds. I'd keep ours, just in case we ever need to fight off aliens or blow up a big rock heading for earth.

If they drop Trident then that's Faslane naval base ****ed along with thousands of jobs. Something for the SNP to think about.
This was said by the Tories with absolutely no foundation behind it...More Tory scaremongering as they have nowt positive to offer.. Was why I said 'political news speculation' mate
Faslane also, Coulport where they keep the nukes. I spent over 2 years of my life guarding the ****ing things, (mind, it was Polaris, then). Hence my user name.
The buggers can't be uninvented! The world's getting more dangerous, more and more countries are getting them, so we need them in our back pocket, just in case. If someone takes us out, lets not leave them anywhere to party after we've gone!
Funny as **** at Faslane mate, guarding the subs.. All kitted out in artic warfare gear, plus a pistol and a pump action shotgun (nee good taking a rifle onto a sub). Poor navy lads, had a blue jumper and a parker, and armed with a torch and wooden baton. Nee wonder they ****ing hated us.
I look at it this way, you walk down a back alley and there's a gang of smack heads at the end they might fancy jumping you.. Walk down the same alley, smack heads at the end but only with a 12 bore shotgun in yer mitts and they might think twice about it.. Yep, we need to keep them..
A thought provoking site that utilises Google Maps mash-up that calculates the effects of the detonation of a nuclear bomb, for e.g. by detonating a air-burst or a surface (using various-size) nuclear bomb over London (or over any town or city for that matter) you can input different variants for innumerable results - the wind direction and speed come into play as well, plus the predictive fatalities/injury count reinforce the true horrors of WMD http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/
A nuclear capacity gets us onto the U.N. Security Council. Without it, we're nobodies. Keep it at all costs.
Personally, I think having nukes is ****ing stupid. Spend the beans on conventional forces instead. Our threats these days are far more likely to come from nutters trying to develop nukes or "dirty" bombs and stopping them will require a conventional capability that we are rapidly losing to budget cuts. Suppose the Taliban go for it and set up a plant just outside Kabul. Do we nuke the city in a pre-emptive strike? Or do we send over a stack of Tornadoes to knock them out? I might be a minority of one, but nothing that has been said has changed me mind...
