Found on a site just now, this guy gave me a great thrill as a player, when I was just a sprog. The chants Hooper.....Hooper can still be heard in my head. What a left footed shot he had, always long range goals with a hard ball. God bless him. Peter Hooper R.I.P. I have just read of the death of Peter Hooper at the age of 78 on Saturday in a Devon care home. Peter played for both Rovers and City, primarily as left wing with one of the fiercest shots I have ever seen. One of my earliest memories is of seeing him at Eastville racing down the wing or powering in a free kick. I met him a year or so back and he was a charming gentleman with a great sense of fun. Truly this man of Teignmouth was one of Bristol's footballing greats. It is sad to see that a lot of the old players have passed on now, what great memories I have of that 62-63 season with the likes of Ivor Allchurch. Peter was a true legend for us, but only played one season......you had to be there!
He must have had one of the hardest shots in football. I remember him heading one of his own shots after it had come back off the crossbar - he must have been 30 yards out and it didn't bounce before it came back to him! RIP Peter.
Clingo, I only have good memories of him, as long as you don`t count when he thundered (and I mean thundered) a shot a shot past the post into the crowd. It was destined for the roof of the net, but hit my pal square between the eyes breaking his nose in the process......hard ball it was!
He was a favourite of mine too. Any time there was a free kick in shooting distance the cry of "Hooper" went up. Guess we are real oldies if we remember. First post, so Hello Bluebirds.
i seem to recall the name but cant picture him, i was watching football in those days with the leather ball. sorry to hear another of the old school who were proper footballers who played for the love of football and not for the obscene money they earn today...RIP Hoops
