Alongside surprise packages Southampton - the only team to prevent the Reds from winning at Anfield this season - Liverpool have received huge plaudits for their impressive early form. For Dalglish, though, now is the time for his former club to move up a notch in their attempts to reclaim a position among the Premier League top four and Champions League elite. "They are the two sides that have been the surprise packages of the season so far and they appear to be the ones playing with the most freedom," the Scot wrote in his Daily Mirror column. "They look fresh and eager and I think they are both being helped by the fact they don't have to worry about European football this season. "Of course, you want to be involved in the Champions League and the Europa League, if you can, but sometimes you can use your absence from those competitions to your advantage. "We are not yet a third of the way through the season, but we are not far off and it is getting to the point where we have to take the claims of Southampton and Liverpool seriously. "Nobody really considered either of them - especially the Saints - legitimate contenders for a top-four place this season.
Just surprised that he is so vocal. Some could argue he contributed to the problems by buying sub par players.
all managers have brought ****e, even the great ones like Paisley the trick is to have a big enough squad so you can hide them in although i agree with your point, i also believe he should have had more time to get the best out of what he brought, new manager was always going to want their own players, so didn't get the logic at the time in getting rid of him esp the money the owners let him spend, but we have owners who are on a steep learning curve. so hopefully we have learnt our lesson and we can get back in the ruddy top 4 asap.
I think some are beyond giving time... The likes of Carroll, Downing, Henderson could never do it even if you gave him 10 years to manage.
Henderson is a good player, the only one in that list who is so your point stands. You could also add Charlie Adam to it who can't even get in the Stoke team.
I can't believe how opposition fans rate Hendo so badly. I guess because they only watch match of the day they don't see the shift he puts in, week in week out. Yeah he's never going to be a world class player - but he's a great player to have. Players with such an engine, are few and far between these days.
I think it's because the fitness at the highest levels of football are so good. All players in the PL are professional athletes and the fitness levels are pretty standardized. Once in a while there will come a freak of nature, like Hendo, or like Gerrard last decade who will blow out of the water the already extreme fitness levels of top flight football. But as you said, will only be few and far between these days.
Bit harsh on Henderson to be honest, he's more than just a work horse, he's improving with every single passing game and he's always looking to learn, stays extra after training, his first touch has come on an awful lot, and he does have a good eye for a pass he just needs to work on his movement and getting in the right areas.
I agree. He's improving and I know he stays behind for extra training. I just think he lacks composure at vital times - can that be taught? I think it improves as you get older. His passing has come on hugely though, for example the diagonal through ball to Suarez against Fulham.
We'll know more about Hendo's potential ceiling when he's 25 ish. Midfielders peak around 28-29 generally. That said Michael Carrick always did a decent job at United, but these last three or so seasons he's been a stand-out performer.
I find it amusing that Man Utd fans point at Henderson. I think he is better than their very own Cleverley. #gerrardvlampard
He's by far a better all round midfielder than Cleverly. I'd say Cleverly has better positional awareness, other than that Hendo is better in all other aspects; engine, tackling, bursting forward, passing etc. But it's guaranteed that Utd fans will argue the toss. Where's UIR??
How about these other United players who can also be consider as 'lacking': Smalling Jones Carrick Evans Young
I think Smalling and Carrick are good players but not as good as they like to think. But then, I'm sure they would say the same about us and some of ours players. Wheres Felliani on that list Dave?
Jones and Smalling are good - Jones has the potential to be very good, unfortunately. As a centre-back though. Evans is and always has been decent. No more no less. What they do know, from years of Fergie, is how to win. OT - there is an irony to what Kenny said. The real time to 'seize an opportunity' was when he wasted so much money on Downing, Adam, Carroll and overspent on Hendo. We had a golden ticket to reinvigorate the squad and he (with Comolli, yes) wasted it.
this The last person to say wasted opportunity I would have thought the way he wasted the Torres millions and left the club with heavy debts and expensive players to get rid of... #elephantintheroom
We bought Suarez and Carroll with the Torres (and Babel) money. Suarez is worth more now than the £50m we got for El Nino. Fair enough, he should be criticised for Carroll, Adam and Downing but where is the praise for signing Luis and Enrique (bargain at £6m!!!)
MFG is knocking one out with a barbed wire glove reading this.... Kenny is, through his new job, stating the obvious. He can hardly as a pundit, when talking about LFC always end his pieces with "but what do I know, I got sacked for buying the wrong players and not making top four " I find it amusing that some United fans are desperately reminding us of KD's purchases. Its past, History as you would put it. I'd worry more about your own managers spending if I was you.......
Hand on heart and sentimentality aside, did he not set the club back? If you had a decent manager at the time, you would have been in a better position than you have been in these last 2 years?
Of course it was a missed opportunity but he didn't set the club back as we were already in the ****! However, why can't you praise the positives too?
