According to TalkSport, Notts County have offered us £150k for Paul Benson - Seeing that would only leave us with two Strikers can anyone see this happening?? Does anyone know if Sam Williams is still around? http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-n...eague/9171/1/notts-county-bid-addicks-striker
I can see it happening, but only if we're fairly sure we've got a replacement. I'd be disappointed as was looking forward to him teaming up with Green. A long way from a done deal if it is true, else he wouldn't be playing tonight.
Thats my opinion as well - Could almost be like when Rommedahl signed it was so he could be alongside another Dane in Claus Jensen only for Claus to leave by the end of August to Fulham!!
He scored last season another player who got a bad ride from our fans and the Green/Benson link up could be a major plus this season.
County fan mate asked me about this over a week ago. I'd be very surprised considering Green signed to team up with Benson. Also, while it's not a reason to keep a player, the column in the Standard gives the club some much-needed exposure. As I said to my mate, possible, but I doubt it.
Agree Mikey... it wasn't a good season to be anyone's first season at the Valley, but I certainly thought he showed considerable promise if he was ever given a cross.
I have made my opinions clear on Benson: he is not that good. Having said that, I think 150k is derisory. 250k and I would bite their hand off. With that I would sign Ryan Lowe.
Well he`s in his 30`s and only scored at league 2 level so why is he going to excell.Benson is a good team player who thrives on crosses that last season never got. Waggy cant cross,Reid started ok then confidence went and was poor and lost ability to cross and others in that position wernt wingers at all. Beano Green link up last night cross goal...says it all.
Well the bid has been accepted according to the BBC, not sure how I feel about this one. I suppose I am a little surprised that we would let him go as he seems to have linked up well in the first few pre season games and would thrive off the extra service he'll recieve this year. Sir Chris must have a replacement lined up!
Why play him last night totaly pointless exercise if this was going through. If we aint got a replacement signed up its no plan B. BWP and Hayes and....thats it,have to believe in CP but seems a foolish move and for just £150k not good buisiness. Is Williams signed up suppose he`s the alternate but Benson is better
I just do not understand why so many believe Paul Benson to be any good. We really are desperate if losing him is such a disaster. I am sick to the back teeth of watching Benson mistiming his headers, getting muscled off the ball and just wandering around for the most part. He is out of his depth and despite Ryan Lowe being a League 2 player, it does not take a genius to see that he is strong and committed and has good skill.
The best description of Benno I heard was that he is a 'frustrated' footballer - his brain knows what it wants to do, but his body isn't able to do it. There was an incident yesterday, when he had the ball on the near touchline, took his eye off it for a moment and knocked it out for a throw under no pressure. He is also too lightweight to be a target man, which we hope Hayes will be, and nowhere near as good as BWP, so I sort of see Ponders' point. BUT his goal last night showed that he and Green have an understanding that was deadly at D&R and could be here, which would make it odd to sell him having just bought Green. If we do, it's nailed on that he will score a bagful of goals for Notts County. Personally I'd keep him, unless we have someone like Le Fondre lined up as a replacement.
Good points, CaptainBA. I have said before that I would be so happy if Benson proved me wrong and banged in a shed-load - because that would mean Charlton doing well. However, how many chances does he need to score on a regular basis? Probably too many by my own reckoning. Imagine Danny Green creating loads of chances for BWP and another striker who is actually really good. If he is to be sold, I would think it is because CP really does not rate him or see him as long term. I admit that a Ryan Lowe or Jamie Cureton are not a long term solution, but I just see a better all round player in them than Benson. Just my own opinion...
