NOTTS COUNTY v PORTSMOUTH League One – 22 September 2012 Link to BBC Preview: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19615160 Last meeting at Meadow Lane 17 December 1994, Div 1 [Championship] Notts County 0-1 Pompey Who are Ya? Formed in 1862, the Magpies are the world’s oldest Professional team. They were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888, finishing 11th in the inaugural season. They suffered their first taste of relegation in 1893, but gained promotion 4 years later. They remained in these two divisions until 1930, but when they dropped out of the First Division in 1926, little did they know that they would wait 55 years to see top flight football return to Meadow Lane. They played three seasons in the First Division before going down in 1984. Victory in the Second Division Play-Offs in 1991 saw them return to the top flight, but they were relegated the following season, thus missing out on being founder members of the Premier League. Another relegation followed in 1995 and they have been in the bottom two divisions since then. Their current tenure in League One started in 2010 after winning the League Two title. County have played in two FA Cup Finals. The first was in 1891, at the Oval. They lost this one 1-3 to Blackburn Rovers; a team they had thrashed 7-1 in the league a week earlier! Their one success came three years later when they lifted the trophy after a 4-1 win over Bolton at Goodison Park. Highest League Finish: 3rd in the Football League in 1891 and in First Division in 1901. Lowest League Finish: 11th [out of 12] in the Football League 1889; 21st in League Two in 2006 & 2008. Match Odds (Wednesday at Skybet) Notts County 4/7 Pompey 4/1 Draw 11/4 Mystic Devo With four wins and two draws in their opening seven games, County are one of the early front runners. Pompey showed again against Swindon that all the effort in the world is fruitless without results. We are now second favourites for relegation, while County are tipped for the playoffs. Devo reckons: No birthday present for Devo or Pompey_London: Notts County 2-0 Pompey
Good thread again Dev Agree 2-0 to Notts County, unless we can sign a decent prolific goalscoring striker before the weekend - and if such a player exists, why would another club loan him to us ?! PUP
After my past two predictions- I predicted 2 "2-1" victories for Pompey- went the other way round, I thought I'd take a different approach. Notts Country 6-0 Portsmouth (If you know what I mean!)
6-0 to Notts County. Edit: Bizarrely, I hadn't read Pompey_London's post when I posted that prediction, great minds think alike or something.
Coincidentally, I remember playing as Notts County on Fifa 2005 at about the same time as Portsmouth defeated Southampton 4-1. In fact I remember playing it the day before, although that may have been in my earlier Scunthorpe game, before I quit for Notts County as I couldn't win.
I'm party to this one, so I hope we win. Be on the look out for a rather dashing brown lad wearing a black hoodie near the top of the away stand, releasing tickertape and probably bog roll streamers. P.S If no one got that hint, it'll be me.
Happy Birthdays to devo and PL Stewie! Hope it's a lucky day for you and us - a good result will keep you smiling
