HULL CITY: I don't need to splash cash in transfer window - Barmby

HULL City boss Nick Barmby has defended his decision not to spend in the January transfer market – insisting he already boasts a squad capable of winning promotion.

Despite City owner Assem Allam pledging funds for team strengthening this month, the club's only business has so far come in the loan market.

    Nick Barmby

Happy with his squad: Nick Barmby

Striker Josh King joined goalkeepers Vito Mannone and Trevor Carson at the KC Stadium this week, and the loan trio look set to be the only new arrivals before the window shuts in 11 days.

Barmby believes the minimal alterations in January reflect a belief in his promotion-chasing squad and the City boss insists he will not "spend for the sake of spending".

"Is there anyone available to come in who's miles better than the lads we've got?" said Barmby, ahead of City's trip to Reading tomorrow.

"I see my players every day and I'm more than happy with the squad we've got. I'm definitely not going to be a manager who dives in to get any old name.

"I'm not going to go out and spend for the sake of spending because that would be a foolish thing to do. We've seen it in the past and I'm not prepared to do it."

Barmby's first transfer window as a manager appears destined to be a quiet one as he keeps faith in a crop inherited from predecessor Nigel Pearson in November.

The City boss has made enquiries over Doncaster striker Billy Sharp and Wolves winger Adam Hammill this month but Barmby says his business looks to be done.

"Unless we were to get an injury to a key player, I can't see us bringing in any more new players," added Barmby. "This squad, if they keep listening and learning, and passing the ball with a good tempo and purpose, can cause a lot of problems in this division.

"I want to work with these players and I want them to get better for themselves and as a group.

"We tend to look at other players away from the club and think 'he's a good player or he's a good player' but what about the players we've got?

"We've got a great crop of players here and we shouldn't forget that."

A reluctance to do more business stems in part from City keeping their promotion-chasing squad intact.

Despite two bids from Leicester for winger Cameron Stewart, the Tigers' board have been true to their word that no stars would be off-loaded this month.

Barmby has been encouraged by such a stance but would not be surprised to see more approaches in the closing days of January.

"I guess when it's the last week of the window we'll see it heat up," added Barmby. "I'm sure clubs may yet make bids for some of our players but I've got assurances that we won't be selling players we don't want to.

"It wouldn't surprise me to see bids coming in because when it's down to the last couple of days and other targets have fallen through, they might move on to others. That's when we'd have to be strong. They'd be barking up the wrong tree."

CARETAKER boss Nick Barmby has been promised the full backing of Hull City's owners in the January transfer window.

Assem and Ehab Allam have also pledged to hold on to the Tigers' young stars even if Premier League clubs – or Nigel Pearson and Leicester – come knocking.

    Nick Barmby

    Transfer kitty: Nick Barmby.

Barmby is preparing for his first game in charge when City travel to Derby County in the Championship on Saturday.

The appointment of the 37-year-old Hull-born favourite has been well received by most fans, although concerns have been voiced over his lack of experience.

But the Allams are confident he can be a big success and say he will be given every support.

"The players are very supportive of Nick and they hold him in high regard," owner and chairman Assem Allam told the Mail.

"The squad is very happy and Nick commands high respect, so we can move on. We are in the business of going forward."

With City trailing the play-off places by just a point, the Allams believe a push for promotion can be maintained.

And despite it being Barmby's first managerial role, they have pledged to back him in the January transfer window should promotion remain in sight.

"We will do everything to improve the chances of promotion, and that includes providing more millions for players," Allam added.

"The question of putting money in during January hasn't changed. The money will be made available."

Premier League clubs are already known to be watching City's crop of young stars, with Everton and Bolton linked with a move for defender James Chester this week.

Pearson's sudden return to Leicester has also led to suggestions he may try and tempt some players to follow him to the King Power Stadium.

However, the Allams say both scenarios are highly unlikely.

"We are looking at buying. We are preparing cash to buy and not to sell. We are not in the business of losing good players, we are in the business of acquiring good players," said the Tigers' chairman.

"Also, I bet you that if Nigel goes to Leicester's chairman and says he wants to approach us for one of our players, their chairman will say 'not Allam again, go for someone else'.

"They now know if you want to mess someone about, mess about somewhere else, not here."

Barmby had initially been lined up to take an assistant manager role at the club under Warren Joyce, who decided to remain at Manchester United as reserve team boss.

The Allams admitted to meeting Joyce with Adam Pearson last Friday, but said they were delighted to have Barmby at the helm, dismissing suggestions he was a gamble or a cheap option.

"Can you name a manager that would not present a risk? Every manager is a risk," said Assem Allam.

"A good manager at one club is not always a good manager somewhere else. It depends on the team as well.

"The good thing is there were 16 top managers who came to Adam Pearson interested in the job. That shows the degree of confidence in our club.

"We believe a part of this is having the right support structure and mechanisms," added Ehab Allam.

"Nick is not on his own. We will be putting in a strong support structure around him.

"Adam also knows the game well, he is a good negotiator and he will be there to support Nick.

"Importantly, the players are all happy here, they have a really good team spirit and they all like Nick."

So he was offered money - turned it down - and it was proven that decision had cost us as the weeks went by with hardly a Tigers goal in sight.

Close to the end of the season, instead of going to the press and saying what he did, he should have been confirming it was his decision not to spend the money in January and thanking the Allams for their support.

Instead, everyone started turning on the Allams and they started to look like they had none too honourable intentions.

No bloody wonder they were furious with Pearson and Barmby. If anything Pearson (and I've always been a massive admirer of Adam) is more to blame for not taking Nick in and advising him and how to approach the Allams and media.

Pearson, was the only person in the whole top management who had the experience to steer both Nick and also advise the Allams.

Nothing has been proven, you've just completely bought in to a one sided press release.

I know that interview was full of contradiction, misdirection and painted a picture very different to the one I believe to be true.

So had Barmby taken on a striker with a wage of £30,000 - £40,000 per week, and finished the season outside the playoffs - where would that have left the club financially? And what would have been the outcome for Barmby?

As manager of Hull City AFC and employed by Assem and Ehab Allam, Nick's duty was to discuss the future and his thoughts with his employers NOT the media until their plans had been mapped out.

You don't go to the press with your concerns when you are part of the management team.

Do you know what they are saying is the truth?

Right now, only the Allams are able to talk to the press and give their side of the story, from what I know, the reality was very different, but as Nick nor Adam can currently talk to the press they are unable to defend themselves or counter what the Allams are saying.

Would you have been happier if he'd said in January 'I've tried to sign players but the Allam's won't sanction the deals, they want to pick the targets for me'?

He tried being loyal to his employers, he got fed up of doing so, he's now paying for the decision to go public, but he's as big a City fan as anyone on this board and only ever did what he thought were in the best interests of the club.

He can't talk to the press at the moment - it's all legal.

I don't disagree he said those things, but as a new manager in his first job, he thought it was best to support and 'big up' the squad he had rather than criticise the owners when it would change nothing, money wasn't available so what is the point in publicly slating them. After months of criticism for not choosing to bring in players (which wasn't true) he tried to make some noises that hopefully in the summer we would get some financial support to strengthen the squad, which certainly hadn't been forthcoming nor were what was being said in private.

Let's see how many millions we spend in this transfer window, because they certainly didn't give Nigel Pearson any last summer or Nick any in January, actions speak louder than words in my book. But let me just say, I am not criticising them for not wanting to spend money, hell they have spent way more than they expected to save the club, but I just expect them to be honest about it. Any true City fan would understand if they turned around and said "sorry, spent 50million, nothing left, lets wheel and deal with frees and loans' but to not make money available then to come out and lie about it, I find that extremely frustrating.

    AGREED.

The Allams have said there peace in the HDM. Now we wait for AP and NB to have there say in due course.

What the Allams have done now is confirm that Money will be available next Jan IF City are in or around the top 6.

But for the summer City can easily deal in the free transfer market and improve the squad. There is much quality about.

Ok this may be a daft question, but seeing that AP was a `consultant`, and this consultancy has now been terminated, what restricts him from airing his views????? Legal challenges ??? if this is the case then why are the Allams going public. The only one who can`t at the moment appears to be NB because as it stands he is still employed by the company.

The matter is in the hands of his lawyers and he can't prejudice any potential case by starting to give evidence in the media.

Because they feel they have done nothing wrong - Adam obviously doesn't agree and coming out slating them in the press will only do harm to any claim he may or may not have.

How can NB choose to speak to the press if he goes down the lawyer route. My god I wish he would speak to the press and give his side of things.

Believe me, he can't, he is under contract with Hull City and has been told by them he is not allowed to.

Once he isn't employed by the club, then there are still many reasons he might not be able to yet (he decides to take legal action like AP) or is bound by some agreement relating to the termination of his contract.
