Hate to say it but by new year we will be 2nd it simply wasn't good enough.yesterday and I think that something has to change and in my opinion it has to be stop the.rotation and play the best eleven.also we need to bring a new striker in Jan and hopefully David Wright I would like us to.go for Calvin zola .
Wright is needed but we are going through a mid season bobble. I think a loss will galvanise the team and the manager and we will find ourselves taking 3 points on Saturday and getting at least 1 point against Southend. This nigh on begging for a new striker seems very strange. We have 41 goals this season equal second highest number of goals scored this season, the second highest goal difference in the division(+20) and the lowest number of goals conceded in the divison. We have goals through the squad, the sign of a real quality side. Look at Manchester United, they have Rooney, he has scored 7 this year yet they sit top of the league same as us... A striker if the rumours are true and Kedwell is on his way out might be needed but right now I think it is low on our list, some quality in the middle of the park (replacing the woeful Montrose) would be a much more potent addition.
Get a grip lads, top of the league at Xmas, who would of taken that at the start of the season?? It's a wobble that's all. The best defence in the league, history tells you that will get you up every time.
To be honest its a wobble that's been going on for a few months now and its only by other results that we are not down in the play offs. That's still a good position to be in tho and I'd snap ur hand off if anyone had said we would be there at the end of the season. Having had the start we did its still pretty disheartening to be loosing games and not getting the results that we have needed recently
The last really good performance in the league that I can recall was Burton at home when took them apart in the 2nd half and really did look like champions. That was in mid October! Since then we have produced at best, bitty performances and backs against the wall, get out of jail efforts (Rotherham?). I'm afraid what I'm seeing on the pitch is very much a similar standard to what we saw last season - i.e. inconsistancy, only performing in parts of a match (rather than for the whole 90 minutes or even just one half will suffice) and playing far too much hoof ball. To me the team has gone stale alarming quickly, and that opposing teams already seem to have sussed us out (we have no WIDTH, apart from when Weston in deployed wide). My worry is that if we continue this form till the end of the season, then we might even miss out on a play off place not just promotion. We really do need both some steel and creativity in the middle and wide areas, plus a target man who can score from open play and not just from the penalty spot. Oh and also a fit again Flannagan back on loan as well... Bring on the transfer window.
Agree that's it's hardly "just a wobble". Our last 8 league games have seen us W2 D4 L2. Not exactly promo or even play-off form. I'm not complaining about our position. If I'd been offered 2 points clear at the top at Xmas I'd have called you an air-headed daydreamer and made cuckoo noises. But the fact is, we haven't really played well or dominated any game for 2 months now. And this has to be reversed or we won't be going anywhere.
wright will bring a calmness back to the team along with a touch of quality in regards to distrbuting the ball and being the back to front link. as for strikers we dont need one i would say but you just dont know with MA and if he can get someone he feels will improve the team then he'll get them.
I think Vincelot has been really poor he only played good once and that was his debut, Wright is a lot better than him so I want him and don't want to sign Vincelot.
I don't know how people can say we have been poor for months yeah we might not have as dominant and we are still 2 points clear .
The mystery in all this decline is what has gone on between Allen and Kedwell. It looks as if Allen wants to shake off the tag that Gills only win if Kedwell starts, by not picking Kedwell. They have had a row but the outcome is that Allen is looking a complete pillock because the longer he leaves kedwell out the more results plummet. The other odd thing is that with far too many midfielders to choose from, the best solution people are promoting is that we should sign an ageing defensive midfielder. It might work but it is certainly odd. Vincelot is an interesting case. He was out of touch yesterday but he has not looked too bad at other times. What he cannot shrug off though is that Gills decline seems to correspond pretty close to him signing. Coincidence or what? Anyway all this is Allen's first real test and he ought to be capable of turning it round but he may have to eat some humble pie. To start off with he could do with writing a new selection list for Saturday starting with Kedwell, Jackman and Whelpdale. He can then adopt his normal technique of using a pin for the rest of midfield and attack. The back line picks itself.
Of course all of us would have taken our position now at the start of the season, but i dont think this is just a wobble! Its been going on for a few months now and i dont know what but something does'nt seem right in the dressing room! Maybe a player or players have voiced concerns about the rotation policy who knows. I think Kedwell will be gone in January personally, Allen it seems does not rate him! Unfortunately i can see us dropping out of the top 3 in the next few weeks and i myself do not have any confidence before any games which i know is a strange thing to say for a top of the table team! We are only still top as apart from Port Vale we were so far ahead of all the other teams, but they are reigning us in now. Its not Port vale we should be worried about but Cheltenham, Southend and Bradford etc...
I suppose it depends on what the OP means on 'not good enough' - if it relates to our season and current league position so far then it cannot be further from the truth. However, if it relates to Wednesday's performance and selection, along with some growing concerns in my mind since just before this time in November, then yes it is 'not good enough'. I want to make it clear though, who do I blame, not the players but MA. His management style has worked wonders up until now but he like all of us old wise men can be stubborn old fools at times. That's all well and good in the right places but if it affects our promotion challenge then you have to question some of the froth coming from a mad dog and the impact that it will have on the people around it, remembering the phrase that goes something like...'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' and that is what worries me.
I have to agree with BRB in reference to the selection in recent weeks. Being a student in Leicester I rarely get to see gills these days but I did manage to get to the Fleetwood game and what alarmed me was the lack of width. I admire Allen's rotation policy but sometimes I get the feeling he does it for the sake of it. Do players like Jack Payne need to be rested as much as he seems to be (i'm presuming he is being rested and not dropped), Montrose is young and seems to lack concentration at times, that's not to undermine his terrific work ethic however. Allen has however done us proud thus far and I can only hope that with the additions of David Wright and perhaps another striker/centre back, we can return to the form which has put us top of the league. UTG
Gills have celebated nine clean sheets this season, but they have not managed one since a 0 - 0 home draw with Cheltenham in early November, which to me indicates they have been sorely missing the services of 'Mr Wright' and 'Faultless Flanagan'. They are conceeding an average of over three goals every two games. What is more disturbing, is what seems the increasing inability of late to create chances/score to negate the oppositions goals when falling behind. It is a great shame for the team the sat match is off. No doubt if they had come out duly fired up after the Boxing Day failures and stuffed the Cobblers 3 or 4 nil, we would all shut up!!!!
