I just dodged a scam bullet and thought I'd share it as it nearly had me. I bid on a car on ebay last week and lost out, I thought fair enough and carried on looking. Then I received an e-mail from the 'seller' asking if I wanted to accept the second chance offer, which I accepted. This has been ongoing since Thursday, I e-mailed back with my number, never got a call, then I got another e-mail from him yesterday apologising as he was on the isle of Skye on his anniversary and didn't have internet or phone signal and gave me his number which obviously wouldn't go through. So I mailed him back again saying that I accept the offer and that I will have the cash waiting for him when he gets back. I got up this morning to another 2 e-mails, one from him saying he'd registered the second chance offer with ebay, and the other from 'ebay' asking for the full payment to be sent to them (£3,300) where they will hold it for 3 days until I view the car and am happy with it. This e-mail looked authentic with all the ebay logos and my username and details, but I thought it was odd for them to ask for the full payment and there were no notifications or anything in my ebay, so I contacted ebay to double check with them before parting with my hard earned - turns out it was all bogus. The e-mails I've been getting weren't from the seller at all, and neither was the e-mail from ebay this morning. They just wanted my cash. ****ers nearly had me though
I used to buy a few minor things on Ebay a few years ago but don't bother any more. Well done for checking it out - sounds like a close shave.
Yeah, it all seemed a bit odd to be honest, but when they asked for the full payment I thought it best to spend a couple of minutes double checking. Bastards
I've heard a few horror stories of people buying and selling large items like cars on eBay. Avoid unless you're clearing out stuff from your attic.
I also have been almost caught by many an online scam. So much so, I have prepared a booklet. If you are interested, just PM me your real name, address, the number across the front of your bank card and your PIN number and I'll tell you all about them !!!
Sounds brilliant, I'll do it straight away. Do you need copies of my driving licence and birth certificate too?
Better had, just to make sure I'm sending it to the right address and to make sure there arent any pidgeons in your bank account (very important to check if you didn't know....they can sometimes fly off with your savings) PM this to me asap and I will sort it all out and I will also send you a free ding ding for your phone. Anything for a friend!!!
The number on the front is called a PAN (Personal Account Number) the 3 digit one on the back is a CVN (customer verification number). If these are both compromised then transactions can be made online and you would need to contact your bank immediately. Anyone with any issues, no matter who you are if you ever think you might be compromised contact me if you ever want any advice
They wouldn't be able to get my account details from ebay Dill would they? I'm thinking they must have got into my ebay account to have my address and ebay account number
Contact PayPal now mate, your log in details might have been compromised. From there hackers may see your bank details
I done that, it was them who confirmed that it was all fake. They asked me to forward them the email for them to investigate further
I have bought seven cars on ebay over the years and so far so good. I paid a small holding deposit through Paypal and the balance in cash when I collected the cars. In total I have done well over a hundred transactions. My friend trades regularly buying and selling and has done over a thousand deals with no problems. That said, it always pays to be vigilant because the scammers do infest the site and thanks to SA9 for highlighting it.
Couldn't agree more Ash. The mrs wanted to email them back with lots of ****s in the text, but I don't see the point in that, I'll keep them thinking it's still on while ebay investigate
Well the original listing said they wanted £100 paid via paypal to secure the purchase, then cash on delivery. It was the sudden request for payment in full that got me suspicious. They sent bank details to pay the cash into so I googled the sort code to see if it was foreign. Turns out to be in Leicester
