Lemmy, Bowie, Alan Ricman and now Glen Frey. 2016 hasn't started well for the world of performing arts.
Wow, he had the royal flush of aliments according to Wiki. "On January 18, 2016, Frey died at the age of 67 in New York City, New York of rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia while recovering from intestinal surgery." This is a pretty horrible combo of auto immune diseases. So, another household name leaves us, must have all been at the same parties.....
When Ann and I first arrived in Canada in 1975 the Eagles were on the radio day and night. I thought it would be great to see them live in concert but was upset when they split up soon after, but when they reformed for the Hell Freezes Over album I got to see them live in Edmonton. After their first concert of the tour a well known music pundit summed up the evening by saying that he didn't believe they could ever regain the same prominence again after all the nonsense, but when he heard the opening riffs he knew they were. That was a very special evening in my life and thank you Glenn Frey for your part in a special memory. Glenn Frey R.I.P.
Another real legend gone and yesterday the drummer with another favourite band of mine from the 70's, Mott The Hoople, passed away too. I loved the recent 2 part story of the Eagles that was shown on TV. Frey and Don Henley were two ruthless, no nonsense sort of blokes who always aimed for perfection, and they didn't tolerate anything less than 100% from other band members and themselves. Between them they wrote some of the most iconic and memorable songs of my life RIP Glenn and thanks
It's a real tragedy and by god I also love the Eagles.. RIP Glenn and a thanks from me.. Also a mention for Dale Griffin, drummer for rock group Mott The Hoople, dies aged 67. RIP Dale..
For some reason didn't really buy into the Eagles but loved Joe Walsh's life's been good. My mum was massively into them so grew up listening to them. Wasn't David Bowie something to do with Mott the Hopple and wrote all the young dudes? RIP Glen and Dale
Yeah - saw that too and I felt rather disappointed about all that. Excellent songwriters though they were, their songs were given life by the contribution of the whole band. I thought GF and DH came over as being rather nasty and unpleasant tbh. They seemed to be saying that as they were the main songwriters they should get more royalty than Felder and Walsh.
Think they were good mates and yes, Bowie did write it. Also think that at that time many bands/performers got on and contributed to each other. Saw Mott at the Colston Hall in' 72 with Queen as support band. I think there's a line in a later Queen track referring to Hoople and me - might have been Brighton Rock or something similar.
Agree. Both came over as very ruthless and uncompromising and power/money orientated. Mind you I also got the distinct impression that Don Felder didn't act very professionally at times either, which just added to the tension.
I loved Ian Hunter and Mott at the time and had seen Queen on the Old Grey Whistle Test playing their first single Keep Yourself Alive. Wish I'd kept the programme!!
I remember seeing it too !! Ian Hunter still makes great albums and at 76 years old he still tours and is appearing at 3 venues this month. Check out Shrunken Heads and Man Overboard. Both are great albums.
