A noble tag line for our favorite Football chat site. But just how true is it? Yesterday I commented on a thread about a rival site. Today said thread has been removed! Why? Surly as long as a comment isn't outright offensive (which nothing was) it should be allowed to stay. We are adults after all. Not 606. Comment, Debate, Create. Freely-ish.
Because that said thread, was nothing more than slander against someone, and basically was set up just to provoke a reaction, not in a debatable way or remotely clever or funny way, and was just turning people against each other.
wasn't me mate, i was reading it also as it went. i never got to see page 3 either, but can imagine how it went, if the first two were anything to go by.
I didn't see the thread in question, but I've seen a few of you mention similar issues and saw Syd's light hearted thread this morning die a bit of a death when a relatively new member weighed in with a 'do one' comment... I can't comment on our Mods 'cause for me as a Newcastle fan they've always been top notch and even helped me with stuff for my charity, stickying/unstickying and putting in the thread directory etc. Also, I guess part of the problem is deciding where the emphasis should lie, with our own fans or with 'banter' - its very easy for threads to start out nice and innocent before turning into a massive, petty slagging match within a page or 2 and quite often its the Mods who get the blame: "this should've been closed ages ago", "where the **** is AG" etc. If they get a couple of private messages requesting the closure of a thread (warrented or otherwise) I guess its just easier to give into the requests from lads on our board and simply close it!?!?
Offensiveness, like beauty is in the eye or mind of the beholder. What offends one person may not offend another. Depends how sensitive/touchy an individual is I suppose.
I deleted it this morning and I agree we should be free to debate without censure but its always a ballancing act. I became extremly annoyed last night, not something I am proud of. I care about this forum and I care about my integrity, both IMO came under attack last night and I responded, should not have and TBH it ****ed my night up. When I logged on today I decided the best action would be to delete the thread and that way we would not have any repeat of yesterday, right or wrong I had to decide. I dont mind the do one comment on the Newcastle board,it upsets me not a jot, I did mind the lies.
Aye the 'do one' comment, wasn't particularly offensive, I was alluding more to the fact there's the odd few who'll simply kill or try to kill a thread 'cause its started by another fan Do you mind if I ask what actually happened last night?
At the end of the day Syd you are the moderator and you have to make choices. I read the thread in question and found it to be a waste of time and childish. I wasn't offended by it as it wasn't directed at me and I could see why you would delete it. On a football forum if people have to lower themselves to simple 'my dad is bigger than your dad' nonsense or just being outright offensive to someone it's time to move on. Either them or me....not sure which. I don't comment a lot and would rather have a decent thread about football and Sunderland than a slanging match with anyone - though it has been known. You did the right thing by taking the thread down just for the simple fact that it doesn't waste anyone else's time. I recon you do a good job Syd. Not a job I'd like 'cos you are there to be shot at no matter what you do. Keep it up and lets talk about some football!
basic premis member came on and posted about the other site which should not be named, the one that lookes like 606 it got deleted by cypress as it looked like he was advertising it he responded by making a new thread accusing cypress of being over there yesterday and advertisising this place over there cypress was never over there, little fight thread deleted member made another thread with the thread cypres posted over there. it was from 6 weeks ago not yesterday cypress never even mentioned this place in him thread, and he isnt even called cypress, so no idea how he was supposed to be advertising this place over there, but according to the member he was so his post should have been allowed. another internet fight, thread deleted this morning. nothing to see, move on folks basically lol
Neil Taylor (the young LB from Swansea) was supposedly all but signed when we found a £1m release clause in his contract but now Swansea are apparently after £10m for him and he is considering legal action against them...obviousy all according to the usual suspect papers. Melvut Erdinc is continuously linked (this time its a figure of £6.5m) and we've been linked to a few promising midfield names Matuidi and Sissoko in the center with Barnetta (the Swiss lad who scored 2 against England) linked as well. Whether or not any of them come off is another matter...
Jesus, you appear to have funds available but what do you think Ahley's stance on wages will be? Some of the guys your linked with wil be on or want top dollar?
Honestly, I think the wages is one the things few sensible fans will attack Ashley for! Whether we like it or not, in his eyes we're just another business, so we might as well try and run like a successful business should! Having the reported wage cap of 50k is imperative at the minute if we want to build slowly and remain sustainable. If you were starting a 2nd hand car company it'd be stupid to wash your '03 Mondeo's in only the finest Iranian lambs milk (slightly random) but its the same for us now...We're a midtable team and should be paying midtable wages. If/When we hit the europeans spots THEN we can think about improved contracts. Until then, where is the justification?
Its the same for us, but to get into those european spots (i cant see Liverpool being as bad as they were last year, and Spurs do not have the CL to contend with) you need to increase the wages to get the players to get you there. its a catch 22 situation though, damned if you do (and dont get it) and damned if you dont (as you cant get it, or very hard anyway)
