The threads about Boothferry and first games have got me thinking. What are your memories of Boothferry that didn't happen on the pitch? When I think of Boothferry what comes to mind is golden goal tickets, the view of the pitch as you walk out into the stand (I used to go in South stand), the really old school tunrstiles clanking and the incredibly tinny tannoy reading out the day's results as everyone shuffled out after the game. And the scoreboard of course.
Sitting on the railings at the back of the East Stand cos it was the only place i could see, i was a small child. Used to try get their earlyish to get my place. Remember queuing for ages to get a Yorkie Bar or a pie at the small stand that served refreshments as you walked into the East Stand. Remember the half time entertainment was trying to get you to kick the ball through the eye of the tiger. Think you could win a Honda if you were lucky enough to win from the DeVries Honda dealership. Dunno if it was at Boothferry Park but i've still got the novelty Straight as Quo single.
When I think of Boothferry, I think of getting there ridiculously early to try and meet the away team bus at the entrance down North Road. Then hanging about outside the Player's dressing room under the South Stand waiting for an autograph from Deano to put with the other 150!
That big **** off clock on north stand, that tatty club shop behind south stand, Them blue invalid cars, twagging school to wait for the players after training, little jimmy lodge. ect
Just the old school terraces, a world away from what we enjoy today. The Kempton been all standing and incredibly noisey and giving an enormous roar pre kick off when the stadium announcer was going round. Kind of had the feel that some away games do atmosphere wise to be honest.
Watching the trains coming in from the East stand was always good fun and either booing or cheering depending on which team's supporters got off.
I had a mate who I used meet up with outside the ground in the late 70's, he always used to say 'meet you by the spaz wagons'
The BP 'station' (or 'halt', to be more accurate) was a thing wasn't it? As a kid, I was a trainspotter and you used to get exotic engines hauling the football trains. Is it possible that, if Mr. Allam gets his way on the KC development, there could be another halt on the rail line running near the KC? N.B. - I'm not asking as a trainspotter any more; it just seems like a good thing as part of the site development because, if the site is built on, there will be much less parking available....
Sitting high up in the South stand with my Dad and my young son, drinking our lucky Bovril....it never seemed to bring us much luck.
The Hull Savings Bank clock on the north stand, I used to look at that to see how much time was left Oh and walking round to the other end behind the goal city were attacking in the second half
The old program shop where you could buy previous home and away programs. As a kid the place looked massive !!
When City scored the surge of the crowd in the east stand would literally lift you off your feet, then everyone would pile forward before being pushed back to where we started. Terraces eh? A huge part of the football experience is gone.
Being down at the front of the North Stand, very near Raich Carter as he took a corner.....a heavy old wet leather ball, and as he booted it, seeing all the water spurting out of it!
Bunkers Hill before the Stand was built and no Floodlights as the rain lashed down and the wind was a gale force ................The mass exodus to get what little cover was available in the East Stand. Oh happy days <grin>
