I completely agree with this statement - "Perhaps the game state influenced some fans’ perception of City’s performance. This was a game won by the side with nearly 70 percent possession and with 24 shots to their opponent’s 6. This was not a smash and grab; this was about gaining three points the hosts deserved." I was starting to wonder if I had been watching a different game, I thought we were much the better side throughout the game but were unfortunately behind on the scores.
Me too, Suffolk. You couldn't have a clearer example of the untrustworthiness of what people say they "see", nor a clearer demonstration of the need to "look at the numbers".

While Ben Lee refutes the idea that Saturday's result was "a smash and grab", i.e. secured points which our overall performance didn't merit, there have been 5 occasions so far this season where, IMO, such an accusation would be justified. Counterbalancing that, there have also been 9 occasions on which I would say "we wuz robbed", i.e. we ended up with fewer points than our match performance deserved. That leaves 12 of the 26 league matches played where justice was, IMO, done. If, in all 26 matches played, we'd got what our performance deserved, I think we'd be 9 points better off than we are, and 5th in the table with 45 points.

Is that on an “xG” basis?

Like Suffolk, I felt a growing sense of frustration throughout that game that a single moment of poor defending was going to result in a loss in a game where we played well. Having scored, Coventry spent the rest of the game defending that lead. Had they succeeded it would have felt like injustice to us, but not to them. That was the reason they had 6 shots to our 24. It took an extreme change in tactics to turn that around in the last 6 minutes, but it worked, finally. Many would say that we should have done better with our first 22 shots.
