Yes, I know we're merely hours away from a brand new campaign back in the top flight, but I was just curious what people think of this scheme? Running from Attlebridge to Postwick, at considerable expense, impacting on loads of peoples' lives - but does our fine city need it? http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/politic...ibutor_road_set_to_start_in_october_1_4180915
Well Cromer - I have to say that I feel it is a waste of money in the same vein as the failed cycle routes in the Avenues (I mean - surely the trees have been there for decades if not longer!!!) and the cost of the project in Tombland soaring to nearly £1M. The only real result I see from this is the continuing 'urban sprawl', so that Spixworth/St Faiths/Horsford will eventually become suburbs of Norwich!!!
Surely St Faiths has always been a suburb? Didn't take me long to stagger home to there from the City anyway, and that was years ago! Can't see the point of the Northern by-pass really, though I have to say, where I live, the Southern by-pass has been beneficial.
Norwich airport desperately needs it to develop. Also being able to get north of Norwich without using back roads, rat runs etc & not getting stuck at the boundary would be amazing. Unfortunately both ends need to link the A47 but no one is going to pay to get over the Ringland Valley area. If any of you have driven to York the A64 meets the A1261 (might not be right just memory guess) one goes south one North of city, works brilliantly, so easy to get straight to the bits if the city you want to. It'd be brilliant if like that, sadly it won't be.
I always felt that a decent road was needed somewhere between East Dereham across to perhaps Coltishall and over to Wroxham, making access to the Broads so much better. Yes there is currently a road that runs through Reepham and Bawdswell, over to Aylsham but it is a horrible road at best. Such a road would also take a lot of traffic away from the current A140 ring road. I still think that would be a better option as there is already an excellent road called the A47 to Acle and Yarmouth so I see little point in creating what would effectively become an 'outer' ring road.
Ideally one end would be Postwick and the other Costessey and North round the top of the city. Dual carriageway all the way, job done. Sadly it won't be & it'll essentially end up a halfway house that'll end up choked
I think Saturday made the case for the NDR and for it to be linked up to the Southern Bypass with a straight road across the Ringland valley with no junctions on or off that stretch. A47 blocked by a serious accident Yarmouth bound and every road in and around Norwich grinds to halt with people stuck in jams for 3 hours and more. As with the M25 - if it is blocked one way you just send all traffic round the other way.
Nothing the Ringland Valley needs more to enhance it than a few millions tonnes of concrete! I live quite near the A47, and get across to 'the north' frequently without any trouble, as I have done for years. If people are stuck in a jam because of an accident, **** 'em. They're not the ones with the problem.
I've worked as a field engineer driving all over the country mostly Norfolk and regardless of accidents getting north of Norwich if you don't know the cut thrus and rather runs is a nightmare EVERY DAY Outer ring road from Dereham Road roundabout till you get past the boundary is ridiculously busy all day every day. Norwich needs a proper NDR the Ringland Valley would be fine with an elevated Road like the Orwell bridge that area is still a beauty spot. Doesn't matter it won't happen.
The Ringland valley would soon recover and not be adversely affected as long as there were no junctions on or off at that stretch. On Saturday nothing could get on to the Southern Bypass Yarmouth bound which soon clogged up the Thickthorn and Harford roundabouts even for people trying to go into Norwich. The queue on the Ipswich Road went back to Long Stratton and back past Wymondham on the A11 and back to Wymondham on the old A11. All other roads in the area were clogged up. This happens whenever there is a serious accident on the Southern Bypass and will be easily solved if the NDR links up with the Southern Bypass. Conservation is not the main issue with the objectors to the NDR as it stands at present. It is a load of NIMBYS who don't want the resulting houses built in their backyard. Tough ****!! They have got to be built somewhere and adjacent to a new purpose built road seems a reasonable place to start.
Take your point, 1950. If this scheme does go ahead, it will also benefit accessibility into and out of Norwich International Airport. I mean, if you've got it, flaunt it
Yep, Long overdue. Will help loads of people get in and out of the city. I just hope it doesn't impact on ringland.
Ah! Airport NIMBYS - another of my pet hates. They buy houses near an airport at a cheap price because it is near an airport and then spend the rest of their lives fighting any expansion at the airport or trying to get it moved or shut down. An ex business colleague of mine bought a huge lovely house cheap because it was under the Stansted flight path and immediately joined the campaign to fight Stansted expansion despite taking at least 10 International flights a year out of Heathrow and a couple of holiday flights a year out of Stansted!! Bloody hypocrite!!
I grew up in St faiths, where it's a bit of a divisive topic. It could well have an effect on the village, although I think the majority of the initial buying work will actually be inside of the road not outside however it will make the place so much better connected. As my interaction with it now is driving back I'm relatively in favour, of course it will be **** all use unless they connect it to the A47, Ringland be damned.
As did I. My old dad taught me to drive on the (then) old airfield. We used to cut across the runways on our bikes to get to the speedway! Those were the days, damn these youngsters and their progress!
