Around here - Norfolk - there are a lot of Norwich fans. I've talked to a few since the good Doctor dropped his bombshell. Indeed, some have rung me, or stopped me to take the piss. I asked them how they'd like it if they were re-branded as 'Norwich Canaries'. Not one of them would welcome it. Some comparisons: 1/ Norwich were first referred to as 'The Canaries' in 1905, based on their club badge; by 1907 it was used quite regularly as a nickname. 2/ In 1908 Norwich played for the first time in 'canary yellow' shirts. So - a similar time of origination, even if the details are different. And a similar resistance to having a change imposed on them, in denial of their history and tradition.
I feel I should add that Norwich fans refer to their club/team as Norwich, or City . And they use the nickname 'the Canaries'.
I'm not in favour of the name change either , and grateful for the support from Norwich fans, but honestly... Canary - small yellow cagebird, sings sweetly, used to be taken down mines to warn of gas......... Tiger - large fierce predator, with a fearsome reputation ......... Well no they wouldn't would they?
You probably find a set of club supporters who are have the most enjoyment at all this are Leeds supporters. I most certainly have nothing but for contempt for that club and supporter......the kings of re-branding. They had the enjoyment of calling our club Amateur Football Club while changing shirt colours and badges, even at the whim of their manager.
OK - I see what you mean re my example. But a fair numbers of posters and readers on here live outside the Hull City AFC catchment area, so what is the attitude/response of other clubs' fans in the areas in which they live.I'm thinking of, for e.g. melu and Southampton; BSM and Leicester, etc.
I live in a Huddersfield and Leeds supporting area. On Saturday one Leeds supporter greeted me with "alright Tiger". That's as bad as it got. He did say that they will be renamed something to do with Red Bull soon anyway.
And rightly so. They'll riot while we sit back and say "Well at least they aren't changing the colours too."
Yes i know I was being a bit picky and sarky, I suppose its because I'd actually be more upset if they changed the strip or dropped the Tigers bit, cos I do think that makes us distinctive and its something to live up to. But at the end of the day we are a team based in the City of Hull, and we are an Association Football Club
