He took his players on a bonding tour of Sweden, where they had to survive with only basic equipment for a few days.[16] The team's success in the early 2016–17 season was largely accredited to the squad's tight bond, something that Wagner claimed was a direct result of this Sweden trip. A few weeks later, they visited Austria and kept two clean sheets in matches against Bundesliga teams Werder Bremen and Ingolstadt 04.[17] After an unbeaten start to the 2016–17 season, Huddersfield were top of the table at the start of September,[18] including a win at St James' Park against Newcastle United.[18][19] Wagner was the EFL Championship Manager of the Month for August 2016 and February 2017.[20][21] On 29 May 2017, Huddersfield secured promotion to the Premier League for the 2017–18 season, following a victory on penalties in the play-off final against Reading.[22][23] On 30 June 2017, Wagner signed an improved two-year contract.[24] He was praised for his achievements in keeping Huddersfield in the Premier League at the end of the 2017–18 season, a feat regarded by bookmakers as improbable and described by The Guardian as "the Premier League's greatest survival story", with Wagner in particular noted as "a leader of rare charisma and intelligence."[25] On 14 January 2019, Wagner and Huddersfield Town agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent, with the team in last place and eight points from safety.[26] Schalke 04 On 9 May 2019, Wagner was appointed as manager of Bundesliga club Schalke 04 on a three-year contract until 30 June 2022.[27] In the second half of the 2019–20 season, Schalke set a new club record of 16 league games without a win between 25 January and 27 June 2020.[28] The winless streak continued with an 0–8 defeat against Bayern Munich in the first match of the 2020–21 season.[29] After a 3–1 defeat against Werder Bremen, the 18th winless league match in a row, Wagner was sacked on 27 September 2020.[30] Young Boys In the summer of 2021, Wagner was heavily linked with the vacant manager's position at recently relegated Championship club West Bromwich Albion, however talks broke down.[31] On 10 June 2021, he was appointed manager of Swiss Super League reigning champions Young Boys.[32] On his debut on 24 July, Wagner's team won 4–3 at FC Luzern.[33] Having won three qualifying rounds, the team took part in the UEFA Champions League group stage where they came last with one victory, a 2–1 home win over Manchester United in the opening fixture on 14 September.[34] Wagner was unable to lead the Bern-based club to a fourth consecutive league title and was dismissed in March 2022. Replacing Dean Smith as head coach last week, Wagner has inherited a side who were tipped to bounce straight back to the Premier League after relegation last season, but it hasn’t quite panned out that way yet as they currently sit 11th in the table. They are still within touching distance of the Play-Offs, though, and the new Norwich boss has good memories of them, having steered Huddersfield Town to the top flight via the end-of-season lottery back in 2017. The United States international, who played three times at the Qatar World Cup, is the Canaries’ top scorer so far this season, with nine goals to his name in Championship action. Formerly of Werder Bremen, Sargent has played much of his football from a wide position under Dean Smith this season, but new boss Wagner has indicated that the American is more likely to be used as a centre forward from now on. A performance of ineptitude to rival the 4-0 stuffing we got at Kenilworth Road last March, awaful defending led to all four Norwich goals, give them credit though, they moved the ball around at pace, looked stronger and appeared to know what they were doing although they did looked to have a frailty at the back as we had chances to score. A wind swept ground and a soggy pitch made for a rare open game at Deepdale, City one of those sides who do not defend deep trying to stifle sides. We did well for 10 minutes looked lively and seemed to have some confidence following two wins this year, but by the 16th minute we were two down, rthe first bnever really cleared the ball and it arrived 10 yards from goal with Puki, he doesn't miss those, more epically bad defending led to the second, could have cleared the ball at least twice, didn't, Dowell 12 yards out, in off the post and a fourth home league game defeat on the trot was almost now nailed on. We hung on for another 10 minutes before the next goal however in that period of time Puki had an air shot in front of goal, Woodman had tipped one round the post and another effort went narrowly over the bar. The third a couple of players went for the ball including Woodman, Puki's pass ook all of them out of the game and Dowell rolled the ball into an empty net, 30 minutes gone game over. A double change for us almost immediately, some fans had already left by this point, did actually create chances unlike Norwich didn't take them and a less than well received half time salute from te home faithful. It is no exaggeration to say that in the first 10 minutes of the second half there could have been 6 goals, we could have had two, Delap hit the keeper and Cannon's effort was saved by Krul who tipped it onto the bar, but Norwich looked as if they could score at will and when it came it was more awful defendin, ball through Puki one on one with Fernandez, no contest, the keeper possible should have closed down the forward but his shot hit the keeper and dribbled over the line, this was the cue for even more to leave. From then on in it was basically a training exercise for City, thankfully, the referee with two brains only gave one minute of injury time even though there had been 8 substitutions and four bookings. Plus points and there were some boh loan forwards Cannon and Delap linked quite well, Parrott had a decent cameo and Browne was the best of the rest. Next at home Spurs. Preston boss Ryan Lowe: "The first half killed the game. There was some good play and good finishes from them, but from us it was very sloppy and unacceptable. "There is no excuse for that performance - I didn't see it coming. We fancied ourselves. We changed shape [to a back four] to be more solid and resolute, but it looked the other way. "I can be outclassed by quality players, I just can't be outclassed in running and fighting and really having a gutsy display and determination. We didn't show any of that. "It shouldn't be difficult [to play at home], but it is at the moment." Norwich head coach David Wagner told BBC Radio Norfolk: "This is a good start because we not only won this game deservedly, but we won it - and this is very important for me - with our style and our identity. "We want to be an energetic, high-intensity, aggressive team and this is what the players have done. "That we have quality in front of goal, everybody has known it, even if they maybe haven't shown it in the past. "It helped that we scored very early, and a second one as well, and this let the confidence grow - but it is only the first step."
That was a shambles. It did look as though the players were confused about their roles and positioning. Lowe said he wanted to counteract the Canaries' 442. FATAL. Should play to own strengths. One week, DIaby is RCH and did very well, but the next game he is RFB and looked out of place, Can't blame him for the debacle.
