If you look at the best players (outfield) England have produced over the last 50 years or so which would you say produces the better talent?

I have to say I think it's one of the great myths in football the north produces better talent and their fans are more passionate. I've always thought the South produces the better players but am open to debate of course

Looking at the talented outfield Englishman down the years I would personally say:

    North

    Bobby Charlton
    Kevin Keegan
    Bryan Robson
    Paul Gascoigne
    Steve McManaman
    Paul Scholes
    Alan Shearer
    Steven Gerrard
    Wayne Rooney
    Michael Owen
    Gary Neville

    South

    Bobby Moore
    Jimmy Greaves
    Terry Venables
    Peter Osgood
    Glenn Hoddle
    Paul Ince
    Sol Campbell
    David Beckham
    Rio Ferdinand
    Tony Adams
    John Terry
    Frank Lampard
    Ashley Cole
    Teddy Sheringham
    ===========================

Even if you factor in the Midlands for the North I struggle to see how any argument can be made that the South produce better players. Most England fans would agree the best England player of all time was Bobby Moore, again Southern. It seems very strange that the media tell us the North is the hotbed of English Football

Also add Kerry Dixon, Roy Bentley and Bobby Tambling to the Southern list.

David Speedie was a Yorkshire man, so it tips the balance towards the north.

Beggy pardon! Speedie was a Scot and played for them internationally! The subject matter here is very hard to get your head round!

Born in Scotland but raised in Yorkshire, Speedie worked as a coalminer, playing for Brodsworth Welfare, before signing professional terms with Barnsley in 1978. Without having scored a single goal for Barnsley in 21 appearances, he moved to Darlington in 1980, where his talent first became apparent. Just two years later, he was spotted by then-Chelsea manager John Neal, who signed him for £80,000 in May 1982.

He is more Yorkie than Scot though.
