After reading an article about Fulham after a current Eastleigh player, does anyone think we should be keeping an eye on the Non-League scene?

    - Charlie Austin
    - Brett Williama
    - Mike Gosney
    - Sam Wilson
    - Totton LB (Not sure of the name)

are all players who have made the jump to pro deals from local sides that i think Saints should be monitoring for any potential gems? Yes, we had Aaron martin but he was reccomended to us, we didn't go out looking

    Thoughts?

To be honest, I think our academy is strong enough for us not to have to fish around in the lower leagues for decent players.

Do you seriously think that Saints do not monitor the lower leagues, especially the reasonably local clubs? However, football is all about opinions & every club misses a player who comes good elsewhere. After all, you can't sign everyone can you.

Have faith! - we will snap up more good ones than we miss

If it aint broke, don't try to fix it...The bus shows no sign of breaking down yet, or even running out of gas. There are only so many pros that the club can hold on its' books and, as somebody mentioned, the long term strategy is to produce our own players. We already have a squad well capable of doing well in the Championship, I'm sure that transfer targets (if any) will be approached in January.

yes i said that - but that was only because he was recommended to us, we didn't go out scouting for him off our own backs, thats the point im trying to make

Wait a minute, who says we don't already? give them some credit, they do know what they're doing! The scouting set-up looks everywhere around the world so i don't think they are gonna do something as stupid as not looking at non league sides.

I'm sure our scouts will be monitering the non-leagues. There are quite a few gems, most noteably Chris Smalling in recent times.

Pretty sure there will be freelance scouts looking out for promising players in the lower leagues who then contact the local big clubs (or Portsmouth).

When I played in the old southern league a zillion years ago, many clubs had scouts at the games, so I expect they do watch, or have an eye on any players making waves, or even have a token relationship with the clubs.
