Epicurus for me...His philosophy is as relevant today as it was around the 300 BC mark when he was writing..
You can get his basic philosophy by using google...I'm not certain of this, but I think the word 'epic' may well have originated from this man..
Epicurus I think believed that you should seek pleasure in your life and has become associated with hedonism and epicurinism both adjectives for the pursuit of pleasure. However, Epicurus found no greater pleasure than discussing philosophy under shady trees whilst drinking water therefore drinking and debauchery that is sometimes linked with him is a bit of a fallacy. Mr RA will no doubt correct me if I have said anything wrong.
His philosophy has been interpreted in many different ways, but my basic summing up of what I believe he was saying is that "If God/Gods are incapable of preventing evil and suffering, then are they really worthy of the title of God, that is if they actually exist at all. With that in mind, we should all strive to glean the greatest pleasures and happiness that we possibly can in our life times". As you rightly say, the pleasures he referred to were often simple ones, and importantly shouldn't be at the expense of others..
I wonder why a lot of Sunderland supporters seem to have an interest in philosophy. It must be the constant 'edge of seat' relegation promotion battles over the years.
James Brown, Jim Morrison, Nick Cave, Fred Astaire, Brian Blessed, Stephen Fry, Ben Elton, Eddie Izzard, Niall Quinn, Gary Bennett, Eric Cantona, John Milton, Charles Dickens and my Dad. There's so many more, could go on all day.
I wouldn't say that philosophy as a subject is something that I have particular interest in, but I do have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and as an avid reader of all manner of subjects, I just happen to come across gems such as Epicurus every now and again...
