Thinking about it ... there is only one name that really sticks in my mind and that is Jock Alexander. I'm sure we've had loads of good right backs over the 40 odd years I've been supporting the Rovers, but no other names seem to spring to mind. If Danny Woodards stays a few years he might give Jock a run for his money tho!

My dad always used to speak a lot about Harry Bamford, although I obviously never saw him. He was in the team that beat the Busby Babes of Man Utd 4 - 0 in the FA Cup (where has it all gone wrong !!) In my memory Phil Bater was a great fixture or us back in the 70' s (back when we were holding our own in what is now the Championship) - and then a second spell in the 80's. Over 300 appearances - plus I think he was caretaker manager at least once - so he'll get my vote.

This position is a no-brainer. I had the good fortune to watch Harry Bamford play towards the end of his career. Had he not been trapped in the Rovers no-buy, no-sell policy he would have almost definately played most of his career at a top level club in the first division and probably been capped at international level. .
I seem to remember that he was about the same build as John Atyeo with same light footed agility.
He was extremely adventurous and skilful on the ball; breaking up the opponents attack; dribbling the ball out of his own penalty area; then taking the ball down the wing to set up a new attacking position for Rovers. In the days of 2-3-5 this was considered outrageous behaviour.

Harry Bamford for right back!!!!!!

I did not have the pleasure of watching Harry Bamford not being around at the time, however as he was a Bristolian, a rare commodity these days,he was a biker and you all appear to rate him, he gets my vote

Not sure how he would fit in these days given the RB and LB are know attacking wing backs.

Henry Charles "Harry" Bamford (8 October 1920 – 31 October 1958) was a professional footballer, who played for Bristol Rovers for his entire professional career. He played as a right-back for the club for thirteen years from 1945 until his death in 1958, making 486 league appearances and scoring five goals in the process.

He joined Rovers following the conclusion of World War II, and had played for Bristolian non-league side St Philip's Marsh prior to this. Because of the war, his professional career began at the relatively late age of 25, but in spite of this he played in the second highest number of Bristol Rovers games of any players at the club, behind only Stuart Taylor.

As well as being a player, Bamford also coached at Clifton College, and while riding his motorcycle home from a coaching session at the college on 28 October 1958 he was involved in a collision with a car. He remained in hospital for three days before finally dying from his injuries on 31 October.

At the time of his death Bamford was still a regular in the Bristol Rovers side, and had played in the previous 59 consecutive games before his accident.

CJS do we nominate players we have had the pleasure to see or can we choose anyone from Rovers history? If the latter is the case then I will change mine to Harry Bamford. Judging by what I have read he was a true great<ok>

gas <hug>

its your favourite mate so whoever is your favourite. doesnt matter if you seen them or not but i would presume to be your favourite you would have built up a reason for him to be your favourite and that reason can be for whatever you like.

i, like you, feel the same about harry bamford. i didnt know anything about him. but reading the above, he sounds like a true great. however i will still stick with pritchard due to meeting the guy during my work experience with rovers when i worked with phil kite and pritchard was in the treatment room with us. also from what i witnessed when watching him play.
