Well we're getting there. Thought I would make a bit more interesting for upfront, that being a target man along with another striker. On the last vote we had to chose our favourite Left Midfielder which was by far our hardest to chose from and it got a record low of only 4 nominations. Coming out comfortable winner though was Alan Walsh with Michael McIndoe coming in 2nd Our Favourite Bristol city team so far ------------------------Gibson--------------------------- Sweeny--------Merrick--------Collier---------------Bell Murray---------Gow-----------Tinnion------------Walsh -------------------ST-------------ST---------------------- So we need votes now for our favourite ever city Striker (TARGET MAN) Quite a tricky one for me. I loved Dele Adebola and he was around at my most successful city team but then I also really like Jon Stead, He was one of the main reasons that kept us up last year and stopped me from eating dog **** at the mem...... So it has to be Peter styvar Jon stead my vote goes for, Over To You
Hi Shiny. One of the advantages of old age is that I've seen pretty well every City player in the last 63 years. It's true that he started as a number 8, inside right or inside forward, in the days when one wing half would be more attack minded than the other wing half and similarly, one inside forward would be less attack minded to the other. So Big John was the attacking inside forward in the fifties and then for the last six years he became the number nine with kids like Brian Clark and "Shadow" Williams at inside forward. At over 6ft tall and a playing weight of 13 stones, 6 England caps, 650 games and 350 goals for City, he qualifies whichever way you look at it. As an aside, I like your choice from those you have seen at City. John Stead is head and shoulders above any other recent striker, not necessarily for his goals, but for his attitude and 100% effort every time he goes on the pitch. A true professional and well respected by me.
Paul cheesly in my time, sure he would have been the England number nine if his career was not cut short
Going to have to think about this as I had my two strikers already in my head and they were closely followed by Glyn Riley and Steve Neville. Now you've changed it to a target man. Im going to have to think about it now . Robbie Turner loved his style, Joe Royle didn't score a lot for us but loved watching him. Jon Stead always committed, Dele Adebola another one, the Chief Wayne Alison gangly untidy but always committed. Shaun Goater feed the goat and he will score. Wayne Allison for me some won't agree but still my choice
I saw Atyeo a few times but to young to form an opinion. Cheese was the best I've seen but this thread is not about the best. I loved John Galley and by far my favourite.
I'm torn between these 2 as well but Big John Atyeo was my boyhood hero,so it's got to be,Big John Atyeo for me.....
never saw big John, but he must be the top choice.....if its target men I have seen, I would go for Robbie Turner....loved his tough style of play, his never say die attitude and his heading like a bullet. Chief would be second i think....
Far too young to have seen him but surely Atyeo has to win? If only on players seen then Steve Brooker, such a shame about his injuries.
I think it would be easier to vote for your top 2 strikers, as we could disagree on 'target man'? Steve Brooker was a great finisher but I wouldn't call him a target man
Big John Atyeo by a mile, but its easy for me because i saw him many times, if he was around today he would probably be even better, 656 games, 359 goals, played six times for England, scored 5 goals, think that says it all.
Ok 'Target man' off the top of my head that I have seen play for the City; Dele Adebola, Paul Agostino, Ade Akinbiyi, John Akinde, Wayne Allison, Ian Baird, Peter Beadle, Darren Byfield, Terry Connor, Shaun Goater, Mick Harford, Chris Iwelumo, Joe Jordan, Lee Matthews, Mark McCammon, Kayode Odejayi, Lee Peacock, Joe Royle, Ãlvaro Saborio, Bas Savage, Enoch Showunmi, Damian Spencer, Ryan Taylor, Steve Torpey. My 1st prize goes to Mick Harford, Now i've paused for thought and the influence of my Dad I will have to give my vote to Gentleman John, respect to our legend.
A very salient point fellow posters; We are in danger of making ourselves look rather -------- if we do not pick Atyeo for one of the two strikers positions. I accept that all of you have their favourite strikers from different times since 1945 but can anyone get anywhere near Atyeo's goalscoring record, let alone his influence on Bristol City for FIFTEEN years. We have already, including me, ignored the other all time great, Billy "Fatty" Wedlock. Please do not insult Big John's memory.
Way to young to have seen Ateyos, but he must get in the side, so Big John Ateyo BobTaylor The Goat was close, as was Joe Jordan
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Crikey, there is some real dross in this line up, but also some very good strikers. Talking of dross, where is Baz Savage in your list???????????????LOL
As many have said Atyeo was also before my time but his record speak for itself. If we were to choose someone to play alongside it would for me be Bob Taylor. So I'm changing my vote from Wayne Allison as target man to be John Atyeo, otherwise we will all be voting for Atyeo again as the goalscorer.
Do we have to have a target man? Why can't we just have 2 forwards? Did not see him play, but given his record John Ateyo must be in the side
