Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan believes the club were right to sell Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

Carroll left Newcastle for Liverpool for £35million on transfer deadline day during the January transfer window.

The Magpies could come up against their former striker on Sunday when Alan Pardew's side travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

Nolan believes Newcastle are better off without Carroll, who is battling to shake off a knee injury to face his old club on Sunday, as the funds from his sale will allow the club to strengthen the squad in the summer.

"It was best for the club," Nolan said on Carroll's departure on January. "It's worked out for us better that Andy's gone although we'd love to have him still here.

"If he was, we'd probably have a few more points on the board and would be able to build a team around him which was going to be great.

"It was best for the club. It's worked out for us better that Andy's gone although we'd love to have him still here. "

"But £35m? Come on. It's an astronomical sum. The club would have taken £10m last season and £4m when we were relegated.

"It shows what he's done in a short space of time and how big he was for us.

"But now he's got a new chapter in his life and we've got a lot of money to spend. If we can get four or five players in for that, it works the best way you can possibly think of.

"We're in such a fantastic position at this moment so let's just see what happens."
    One man band

Newcastle were tipped to struggle without their star striker, but Nolan believes they have shown they can cope without the England international.

"Everyone's seen we're not just a one man band," added Nolan.

"We've got a core of a team that has played the majority of the season

"Although we've had a few hitches and glitches, we've done really well."

To be honest I agree. Right now, I'm thinking that if we spend the cash wisely in the summer, I'd rather have the money, as we could bring in a few fantastic players.
Also shows we're not a one man team, as Nolan states! And we've most definitely proven that!

it would have been amazing and any OTHER day id of sold him at 35m anyday but not in the last few mins of the transfer window! but yeah overall it will have benifitted the club in the long run!

He's saying exactly what most of us are thinking so at least we're all on the same wavelength. Overall we're far better off with money to spend on a painfully thin squad.

We were all worried at the time about it. But right now, it certainly is proving to have been the right decision.

    Onwards & upwards for us!

He's right. It was much better. Ben Arfa up front with a top striker can score just as many goals as Carroll (if not quite a few more) and still leave us with a big chunk of cash to spend elsewhere.

    It's a no brainer.

Aye the deal is right if we spend the money, its naive of Nolan to come out and say the deal was right until we have confirmation that the money will be spent, or we actually see the money being spent, I'm still not convinced.

I'd rather him talk like that to the media than the more sceptical comments made by Joey and Jose. I know we're all nervous about that money never being spent, but I'd rather players sound confident and trusting in the administration, especially as we try to attract new players, and keep the ones we have.

That is a very good point, its better to see players being optimistic and trusting the men upstairs I suppose, this will help us trick players into signing for us ;)

I think he's just relieved he doesn't have to babysit him any more.

I can imagine Kevin and mrs Nolan in bed, just about to get frisky and there's a knock on the door.

"Uncle Keeeviiiin, can I sleep in your bed tonight? I had a nightmare. :("

Then Nolan and his mrs just sitting upright whilst Andy sleeps tucked up between them, sucking his thumb.

He's half right...In that, selling him for that price and still doing OK is good...Now if we can improve the team overall THEN it's a good thing, if we still stay middle of the road then it was pointless!

Selling Andy Carroll was never the right thing to do.

£35m? So what? He'll be worth twice that in a couple of seasons.

This whole idea of us needing the money is total ****ing bullshit. Newcastle United as a business is very sound... that's why Ashley isn't going anywhere because the figures are impressive. Yes, Freddy Shepherd overspent and was killing us financially in the long term but we were NEVER in a position where we needed to sell Andy Carroll.

We'd waited decades for the next bright young thing to emerge from the academy and once he stood upright he was sold. You can say that he wanted to go and it's true but it was purely for the stupid money he was offered... £80,000 per week would turn most young mens heads. He wasn't unhappy here, signing a 5 year deal proved that.
I loved the analogy that someone wrote on here about Carroll 'leaving the love of his life for a rich person' which is true!

I'm as angry about his departure as anyone else but I will never say that it was a good thing.

    How could it ever be?

So you think in two seasons he'll be worth a few mill less than Christiano Ronaldo? <laugh><laugh><laugh>

Are you for real? Newcastle United is far from financially sound. We have huge debts and we're running on a loss year after year. Every year we run at a loss, Ashley has to put more money in to make ends meet. Let me make this point very clear. The club costs more than it makes to run.

Are you even aware of the dire state Freddie Shepherd left the club in? His unsustainable spending ripped the club to bits financially. Ashley has worked well to bring the losses and debt down, but we still have yet to fully recover.

What's that got to do with us? We have a wage cap, which is the sensible thing to do as we attempt to reach financial stability. If he isn't happy with that and wants to leave his boyhood club for more cash, then it's his problem. Not hours. We have players accepting pay cuts to stay here and arriving here with wages at the wage cap or lower in the Summer. They do it, and they're not even from the North East.

    Easily.

In an attempt to sort out our finances, money is very tight. We have a thin squad and Ashley isn't just pumping in endless cash anymore. Sure we had Carroll, and he'd score a lot of goals, but unless he scores as many goals as Messi, he is a player which CAN be replaced by new players who can score almost as many goals.

We've sacrificed him, but that's gave us cash to do things which we otherwise never could have done. That includes expanding squad depth and improving the squad in other areas with some top class players. That is ON TOP of bringing in a new striker who can make sure that we're a strong attacking threat.

Carroll would have scored goals, but the rest of the squad would have remained permanently weaker as a result, and we would never have got anywhere.
