Joey Barton: Burnley midfielder receives Championship winners' medal Burnley's Joey Barton and James Tarkowski have finally received their Championship winners' medals following a mix-up by the club. The Clarets apologised after midfielder Barton and defender Tarkowski had to go without one at Monday's celebrations.
Our loss, Burnley's gain, likely on a modest contract too. Embarrassing treatment considering he was voted their player of the season. Initially upset with the incident, Barton took it in good humour, but refused to lift the Championship trophy. However, the one-cap England international did lift a trophy of sorts - after claiming a blow-up replica from the crowd, and waving that about his head as he continued the celebrations with his teammates. please log in to view this image Unhappy: Barton wouldn't lift the Championship trophy please log in to view this image Lifting the trophy: Barton with his inflatable version Joey Barton: Burnley midfielder receives Championship winners' medal Burnley's Joey Barton and James Tarkowski have finally received their Championship winners' medals following a mix-up by the club. The Clarets apologised after midfielder Barton and defender Tarkowski had to go without one at Monday's celebrations. The Football League had advised 25 medals would be presented, but 27 players came forward. Burnley's media manager Darren Bentley took the blame, explaining to BBC Radio 5 live: "It wasn't my finest hour." He added: "In all the excitement, I just completely lost the plot and all 27 went forward - of course it would be Joey that's last, wouldn't it? "I've apologised to both the lads. They were really good about it." Burnley's player of the year Barton (right) and Tarkowski were presented with the medals on Tuesday Barton, 33, was one of the last to arrive at Burnley Town Hall as the players were about to lift the Championship trophy, celebrating an immediate return to the Premier League. When the trophy was passed around the squad, the club's player of the year refused to lift it, instead holding aloft an inflatable one he got from the crowd. "No medal? What's going on?" the former Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder tweeted. The club later wrote: "Burnley Football Club would like to apologise for the mix-up during the medal ceremony. "We would like to apologise to the Football League for this administrative error and every player will be receiving one." Joey Barton, voted the club’s player of the season after proving a key cog in Sean Dyche’s midfield, missed out on a medal at the celebrations - because there weren’t enough! Barton, 33, was set to be the penultimate player to receive his medal from the Football League, at the event held outside Burnley town hall, ahead of the trophy parade. However, with skipper Tom Heaton set to lift the trophy and only one medal left, Football League representatives refused to hand Barton a medal. It came because league officials were insistent that Heaton, set to be front and centre of the celebrations as the trophy was lifted for the first time, needed to be wearing a medal. please log in to view this image No medal for Joey: Barton was not given a medal during Burnley's presentation please log in to view this image Embarrassment: Football League reps refuse to hand Barton a medal Burnley would later take the blame for the situation, after putting forward 27 players - despite being told they'd only be presented with 25 medals. Yet, it was an embarrassing situation for the Football League, who have already come in for criticism for not allowing Burnley to celebrate with the trophy on the pitch at the weekend - because they were playing away from home. The incident prompted Barton to tweet: "No medal? What's going on? ” Initially upset with the incident, Barton took it in good humour, but refused to lift the Championship trophy. The latter wrote: "It was only banter, as if I'd refuse a Championship winning medal! The ribbon wouldn't fit over my ears so waiting for one with more give!" Defender Ben Mee, who was voted players' player of the year on Sunday evening, expressed his disappointment at the Football League's decision to make Burnley wait to get their trophy. "It was a shame we couldn't have it on the pitch on Saturday - everybody's had their say on it, it was ridiculous," he said. please log in to view this image "But we saw it last night and we got to hold it, so to officially have it is great and to do it in front of the fans was great. "That's what we were upset about, the fans travelled to Charlton for an early kick-off, it was great support and a real shame we couldn't show them the trophy. I can't understand why because I don't think anyone was going to disrupt that." Dyche's squad attended a civic reception in the town on Monday before former Labour spin doctor and Burnley fan Alastair Campbell interviewed several players on the town hall balcony, before embarking on an open-top bus journey to Turf Moor. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/joey-barton-refused-championship-winners-7934153
I think he should be awarded a special big and heavy medal, tie it tight around his neck, then someone take the **** swimming
Said it at the start of the season and was shot down for it. Should have moved heaven and earth to retain Joey in the summer last year and sacked off Ned.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy...has he taken to Twitter about it? Anyone who follows him (and is willing to admit it) let us know what he's said about it.
Precisely the point. He was one of very few players that really cared. Our problem was that there were too few. As Leicester City have proven it's all about attitude.
He may have cared, but it didn't take him long to slag us off once he'd found another club. Just my opinion but I thought his free kicks and corners were awful and the majority of his passes didn't find a team mate, glad to see him go.
That's bullshit, we weren't relegated because of him, we were relegated because of the rest of the **** players around him.
We badly missed Joey this year. I can understand why people don't like him but I think such people reflect on the personality rather than the football player. He was by far our best player last year and that was reflected by the reception he got when he returned to Loftus Road with Burnley. If he was in our team this year, we would have finished far higher in the league. He is an excellent Championship player. I think he has won this league at least 3 times in his career. Big mistake by the club to let him go.
