After watching the opening ceremony of the olympics and seeing all those small countrys some with only nine athletes i wonder why Wales could not go it on her tod .

It would be fantastic to see the Red Dragon flying high with athletes from our nation proudly walking out in red and green ,why not and i say to those who say the UK is too small to split is that its about compeating for your country not keeping a depleated dying imperial system together ,you might agree or not agree but to see the Welsh flag flying and OUR national anthem being played would bring a lump to my throat.

The world would welcome Wales im sure ......;O)

    hmmmm tricky one....

it would be amazing to have the welsh flag flying as an independant nation competing, as you said countryies like aruba, american samoa etc with one athlete get a moment of pride as they fly their flag to the world, we'll just be drowned out behind the Gb flag.

i think it comes down to politics tbh, and the fact that we've competed as GB for however many years.....<ok>

A good point JH, I don't know the history behind it or why. Perhaps it's a case of "it's always been GB so why change it".
Does anyone know the reason the Olympic organisation decided GB instead of separate entities?
Would Wales, Scotland and northern Ireland have to become independent countries to participate under their own flag?

Don't know the answer to this , but what about re doing the union flag to include Wales ? How can that flag represent the whole of the U.K when we are omitted ? Or just a nod to welsh , scots , N. Irish and English and let them have the flag of their nation on their strip ?
And the Media using the correct name i.e the Great Britian Football team not England , the England and wales cricket board not just England

You have it in one DNA the union flag has nothing to do with the place i was born Wales so why should i or any other Welsh person acknowledge it as ours, i remember in Hlloand a few years ago we had to fill in student forms and they put english all the time not GB or UK and when we complained they said that was the way it has to be!!!!

Often wondered why the cricket is just called England as well ?

Pontblue you see yourself as British then Welsh well thats your choice but most of us younger generation see ourselves as Welsh first and then British

Tell me one thing then if your a royalist why arnt any of the English royal family born in Wales/Scotland or N/Ireland if thats what they claim to be British ...............they seem to take the P big time m8 ..........;o)

the whole thing seems to be a minefield.. different sports have different rules with regards to great britain and its nations. no-one seems to know why..

agree with DNA, perhaps one way of each nation getting representation would be to have a Gb and wales/scottish.n irish flag on their kit....but i suspect people would just say why not go the whole hog and seperate??

FFS mark lawrensen on the GB senegal football match kept saying 'england' instead of 'team gb'. i suspect thats how many other people see it too....

LOL I'm only 25 John! Don't try and retire me off just yet.

I have an English Mrs, so a "mixed race" daughter lol and I don't really differentiate between us. Our troops fight for GB, we're governed as GB and I consider myself British and as a Brit I'm proud of our history, including our Royal family.

I'm proud of where I'm from and think Cardiff is one of the best cities in the world but, yeah I'm British first.

    Thanks John.

From wikipedia: The historical reason for no Welsh symbol in the flag is that Wales was part of the Kingdom of England when the flag was created in 1606

Changing it wouldn't hurt but not sure what it'd achieve.

    A Principality apparently ...........

1606 bloody ell 1966 was bad enuff and they still go on about it ...;O)

How about a flag or badge like the British Lions rugby ,could do worse but no reconision on the flag is an insult to Wales if any welsh sports person has to stand under it

Mabon underneath your post you put that we should ban any welsh player who wants to represent Great Britain, wouldn't that seriously weaken the Welsh game seeing as we have 4 of our current star players representing them? I don't have a problem with it seeing as FIFA have come out and given the FAW promises that the Games won't affect our independent status at international level.

To put at risk our national team by playing for the English under 23 side, is in my eyes unforgivable and personally they dont deserve to wear the red of WALES. Blue FIFA have given us nothing but words, they have been asked for it in writing FIFA have refused to give gaurantees, blatter himself stated that if we play as one nation there is a very real risk to our independence.

I think the problem is - the other events all compete as GB, so have to be consistent with the footie too - Although, your point otherwise is very valid JH.
