Yeah it is a shame. Imagine if he didn't have his accident and what he could have achieved. Ferrari would have eventually lined him up alongside Alonso where he would have done a lot more than Massa these last few years. But at least he is still offering more to Motorsport in the WRC and also he is a handy simulator driver for F1 teams still
Thanks . I don't know why it took me so long to realise this existed !!! I like Football but I LOVE F1 Gay Bacon Strips will back me up I hope ;-)
Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that Ferrari had intended to offer Robert Kubica a drive prior to the accident that appears to have ended his F1 career. In an interview on the Scuderia's website, Domenicali admitted: "Yes, we were keeping an eye on him. Unfortunately, I don't think he will be back, because with his physical problem, he would struggle in certain limited situations which require reactivity." Kubica has made a steady recovery after almost losing his right arm in a rallying accident in February 2011 and was linked to a Ferrari test drive in the summer of 2012. The 28-year-old Pole has since used Mercedes' simulator and yet, as things stand, he lacks the necessary movement required to control an F1 car. Switching to rallying, Kubica currently leads the WRC2 standings and will step up to the WRC at next month's Wales Rally GB. The idea of Kubica partnering his friend Fernando Alonso is one of the great 'what ifs?' of recent times, although Domenicali stressed that Ferrari had to give Felipe Massa the chance to prove himself after the serious accident he suffered at the 2009 Hungarian GP. "From a medical point of view, there is no proof that the accident left any permanent damage, such as problems with his sight or reflexes. And then there's the gentility which would demand that we give a driver who hasn't had much luck, the chance to show he deserves to stay with us," Domenicali said of the Brazilian. "If Felipe was unable to deliver the performance we hoped for, it was mainly down to a hyper-sensitivity to a car that was too nervous at the rear, but in 2008, he almost took the title and I consider him as a world champion." Massa is now making way after eight seasons to be replaced by the returning Kimi Raikkonen, who won the world title in 2007 before making way for his next team-mate. "We took Raikkonen because we wanted more. When we replaced him with Alonso, he was not happy and so he returns with a great desire to do well," Domenicali added.
I just want to go up to Kubica and yell "Why???" Why risk a place in F1 to have a jolly around in a rally car here and there? Wasted talent!
He loves racing cars, and like most drivers, probably though that 'it' would never happen to him. Way back when, most F1 drivers usually did other forms of motorsport, touring cars, F2, CAN-am etc but with all the insurances and contract/sponsor stipulations it is a rare thing these days, and probaly will be even rarer following Robert's misfortune.
The chances of him suffering the injuries he did, in the manner that he did, were probably so slim. I mean, he hits the one unprotected piece of armco, which consequently goes through the crash structure into the cockpit, and he almost loses his hand. What were the chances of it playing out like that?
Yeah, it's a really slim possibility, but it's a risk that has sadly cost him a shot at becoming an F1 champion. He had the potential to do it.
Kubica was doing well in the WRC Monte Carlo winning 2 stages and finishing 3rd on day 1 but then he crashed it this afternoon.
If he's capable of handling a rally car, why is he not capable of handling an F1 car? I get that the speeds are much lower, but you watch a rally driver working the wheel and the gears, and it looks a hell of a lot harder to stay on top of a rally car.
Just a quick question, if you crash the car at a certain rally is that it for the rest of the stages, Kubica and Neuville have both been out since they retired..
Bloody hell that is harsh. And they can't take part in the rest of the stages? A good start thrown away. Actually I understand why, they need the full times to tally up for the event, so they all need to be completed. Duhh
